WATCH: CNN’s Poppy Harlow and Jim Sciutto Read Out Jamal Khashoggi’s Entire Washington Post Op-Ed on Air
CNN’s Poppy Harlow and Jim Sciutto took time on Thursday to honor Jamal Khashoggi with a live-reading of his last column before his alleged murder by Saudi officials.
Last night, Washington Post released Khashoggi’s last piece before his suspicious disappearance, wherein he lamented the restrictions on freedom of expression in Arabic nations. Khashoggi particularly criticized how Arab governments suppress the media while pushing state-run narratives to keep the people misinformed and incapable of addressing public matters.
As Sciutto and Harlow read through the piece, the former highlighted Khashoggi’s remarks on how this suppression of the media no longer draws the international condemnation that it used to, so oppressive regimes are given leeway as they find more and more ways to control the flow of public information.
Harlow followed up at the end by remarking on how important this subject was to the columnist, and how Washington Post gave him a platform to express his views when he might not have been able to anywhere else.
