Wendy Davis Just Won an Award, But Not a Good One…
At the close of a crushing year, former Texas gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis finally won an award: Texas Monthly’s Bum Steer of the Year. It ain’t a compliment.
Davis rose to national prominence in 2013 after a thirteen-hour filibuster to (temporarily) defeat a stringent abortion bill in the Texas legislature, and quickly turned that political capital into a gubernatorial run, igniting hopes of a Democratic resurgence.
But after a woeful campaign that saw inconsistencies in her biography and bad messaging, she not only lost to opponent Greg Abbott by a landslide, but actually underperformed for a Texas Democrat. And thanks to a questionable ad playing off Abbott’s disability, she didn’t even win the Good Sportsmanship trophy.
“Nothing, and we mean nothing, could match the train wreck that was Wendy Davis, Battleground Texas, and the Democrats,” the TM editors wrote Thursday.
It’s an especially harsh honor after TM touted her rise on one of its few non-BBQ related covers last year. Compare and contrast:
