Abuse Survivors Give Powerful Testimony Against Larry Nassar: ‘You Are the Spawn of Satan’
A legion of women are speaking out in a Michigan court hearing against sexual abuser Larry Nassar, and their testimony is excruciating, impossibly courageous, and enduring.
The parade of survivors who testified in court include Olympic gold medalists Jordyn Wieber and Aly Raisman, both of whom worked in their statements to be certain that every woman’s voice be heard in equal measure.
“I want everyone and especially the media to know that despite my athletic achievements, I am one of over 140 women and survivors whose story is important. Our pain is all the same, and our stories are all important,” Wieber said.
“Larry, you do realize now that we, this group of women you so heartlessly abused over such a long period of time, are now a force and you are nothing,” said Raisman.
One by one in a seemingly endless barrage of horror stories, women came forward to express their thoughts and speak the truth.
“No one could help me figure out the why behind my symptoms,” said Nicole Reeb. “Why was I so messed up? Why couldn’t I go a day without anxiety medication? Why was I so emotional? Why did I get angry? The abuse I suffered under the guise of treatment by Larry Nassar is my why.”
“You’re a pathetic monster who is only sorry you got caught,” said Jamie Dantzcher.
“You deceived me, you manipulated me, and you abused me. I truly believe you are the spawn of Satan,” added Jeanette Antolin.
Amanda Thomashow highlighted how little protection the women had against Nassar and how the institutions which were meant to support them completely failed them.
“I knew that [Nassar] had abused me,” she said. “I reported it. Michigan State University, the school I loved and trusted, had the audacity to tell me that I did not understand the difference between sexual assault and a medical procedure.”
