Elizabeth Warren Faces Furious Attacks From Debate Rivals on Health Care: ‘At Least Bernie’s Being Honest’

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) faced heavy fire from her fellow Democratic presidential candidates on Tuesday night’s debate stage in Ohio as she attempted to defend her Medicare for All plan.

Warren argued that the U.S. “can pay for” the federal healthcare program without raising taxes on working class and middle class Americans: “I’ve laid out the basic principals. Costs will go up for wealthy, they’re gonna go up for big corporations. They will not go up for middle class families, and I will not sign a bill into law that raises their costs.”

South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg fired back, saying that Warren has a “plan for everything — except” a plan to pay for Medicare for All. Instead, Buttigieg argued that his plan would allow “Medicare for all who want it.” Buttigieg went on to call Warren’s answer on paying for the plan “A yes or no question that didn’t get a yes or no answer.”

Warren responded by insisting that she spent her time in Washington, D.C. studying “why hard working people go broke.”

“One of the reasons for that is the cost of health care. Back when I was studying it, two out of three families that ended up in bankruptcy after a serious medical problem,” continued Warren. “The problem we have got right now is the overall cost of health care. You can try to spin this any way you want. I have spent my life on working on how America’s middle class has been hollowed out and how we fight back.”

Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MI) piled on to the criticism of Warren by pointing to Senator Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) Medicare plan, which he admits will raise some costs on the middle class:

“At least Bernie’s honest here and saying how he’s going to pay for this,” Klobuchar said.

“I appreciate Elizabeth’s work. But again, the difference between a plan and a pipe dream is something you can actually get done,” the Minnesota lawmaker added, before accusing Warren of “making Republican talking points” by claiming her plan will not raise taxes on the middle class.
