Fox News’ Shepard Smith anchored coverage of President Donald Trump‘s Oval Office address on Fox broadcasting tonight, and as soon as it was over he immediately fact-checked several statements from POTUS.
He fact-checked stats from Trump about violent crime from undocumented immigrants, drug crossings, and more, including Trump talking about the trade deal with Mexico paying for the wall. “That trade deal is not yet complete,” Smith said.
He also pointed out Trump “said he would own the shutdown,” while at one point tonight POTUS blamed the shutdown going on so long on Democrats being unwilling to fund border security.
Smith then spoke with Chris Wallace about whether this makes the case for Trump’s base. Wallace said yes, but the question is whether his base was enough. He pointed out Trump ran on immigration in the midterms and the Democrats won the House.
