Fox’s Faulkner Shuts Down Comparison Between Colbert’s Arrested Staff and Jan. 6 Rioters: ‘Troubling’ but ‘Not Nefarious’

Harris Faulkner rejected the idea that Stephen Colbert’s detained staff around the U.S. Capitol holds the same “nefarious” element as the rioters who stormed the building on January 6th.

The Fox News host was interviewing Congressman Andy Biggs (R-AZ) on Tuesday’s edition of The Faulkner Focus, and the conversation eventually turned to the news about Colbert’s team getting arrested last week at the Longworth House Office Building on the U.S. Capitol complex. The group was released from detainment after being charged with illegal entry, and Faulkner rolled footage of Colbert defending his team by noting they were invited there by congresspeople and were working on some “last-minute puppetry” at the time.

During Colbert’s defense of his staff, he blasted commentators like Fox News’ Tucker Carlson — who claimed that his crew was committing “insurrection at the United States Capitol.” Carlson has previously minimized and spread conspiracy theories about the January 6 Capitol riot on numerous occasions.

Faulkner didn’t bring any of this up directly, but she seemed to reject the idea of Colbert’s staff carrying out an “insurrection,” even as she asked how did the security breach happen.

“How did they get in there? How does this continue to happen?” Faulkner asked. “If Democrats really are serious about getting to the bottom of what happened January 6th — not that this compares to that at all — but this would be like a bunch of strangers just gaining access to something that should be really clamped down on.”

Biggs responded by bashing his “elitist” congressional colleagues “who don’t think they have to follow the rules.” This falls in line with how Republicans have been accusing Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) and his staff of improperly allowing Colbert’s team into the building.

Faulkner finished by returning to the matter of Capitol security, asking “why weren’t there more resources on January 6th? How does something like this happen? Not nefarious by Colbert’s team, but certainly troubling for all the reasons [Biggs] just mentioned.”
