GOP Rep: Oprah Does Great Television, But ‘Hasn’t Shown The Qualifications’ To Be President
Rep Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) isn’t exactly on-board with a potential 2020 Oprah Winfrey run.
After making a widely-praised speech at the Golden Globes last month, there was speculation as to whether the former daytime talkshow host would consider running for president, an idea she appears to firmly reject.
However, President Trump went after Winfrey on Twitter over the weekend over alleged “bias” during a 60 Minutes segment with a table of Michigan voters and baited her to run in 2020 so that she can “be exposed and defeated just like all of the others!”
When asked to react to a NPR/PBS/Marist poll that show 54% of voters don’t want Winfrey to run (35% said she should, 11% were unsure), Kinzinger made it clear he belonged with the majority.
“She’s a well-known person here. She’s fun to watch on television, she does great television but hasn’t shown herself to be worthy of running for president,” the Illinois congressman told Fox News’ Mike Emanuel. “I mean, I guess she could run for it but she hasn’t necessarily shown the qualifications of what it would take to be president.”
Kinzinger called Winfrey an “inspiring person” and noted the “intrigue” many people have in a 2020 run, but ultimately thought that they would ask “what has she done” to shown that she can be a good Commander in Chief.
That being said, he did admit seeing her run would be “fun to watch” and predicted that the Democratic primary in 2020 would be “more crowded” than the GOP primary in 2016.
