Twitter Blasts David Brooks For Suggesting The Left Should ‘Show Respect To Gun Owners’
New York Times columnist David Brooks is taking heat for suggesting that people should “show respect” to gun owners during policy debate on guns.
In a piece called, “Respect First, Then Gun Control,” Brooks argues in favor of civil discourse, but took the position that the left will never see gun reform unless they respectfully comprehend the right’s position and for the to “lead the way” in preventing school shootings.
“So if you want to stop school shootings it’s not enough just to vent and march,” Brooks wrote. “It’s necessary to let people from Red America lead the way, and to show respect to gun owners at all points.”
Well, that really set off Twitter.

On the one hand you have that vile David Brooks column telling kids who just survived a gun massacre to show some respect to gun owners, and on the other you have the alt-right/Fox News smear machine starting its smear campaign. Nice.

on guns, david brooks proposes a bridge to nowhere — with lots of safe spaces along the way for gun owners to feel unthreatened while the people who don’t like being shot dead apologize for antagonizing them by advocating for life-saving policies https://t.co/D5xja7B5KY

In high school, I had a calculus teacher who, apropos of nothing, would go on mid-class rants about liberal politics. These rants were devoid of humor, nuance or self-awareness. They were unwanted and contributed nothing.
Every time David Brooks trends, I think of that teacher. https://t.co/vSV8iyr3RV

The #Parkland massacre is, for David Brooks, a great opportunity for liberals to eat shit in atonement for their disrespectful anti-gun prejudices https://t.co/QVTg82TCCG
