‘It Has Nothing To Do With This Conversation’: Abby Phillip Shuts Down Guest’s Wayward Point Defending Trump’s Pardon Claim

President Donald Trump baselessly claimed that former President Joe Biden used an autopen to sign some pardons, which means, he alleges, makes those pardons invalid.

“But I would say that they’re null and void because I’m sure Biden didn’t have any idea that it was taking place,” Trump said on Sunday night. Hours later, he wrote on Truth Social to declare the pardons, “VOID, VACANT, AND OF NO FURTHER FORCE OR EFFECT.”

Though Trump’s claim has no basis, his supporters – as they tend to do in these kinds of situations – have dug deep for explanations as to why he may just be onto something. On Monday’s CNN NewsNight, Carrie Sheffield gave it a go by rattling off statistics about elder exploitation.

“I don’t think it’s about the pen,” Sheffield said. “I think it’s about the cognitive decline of Joe Biden that the press covered up for four years. It’s about the fact that this could be– he’s talking about elder abuse.”

“But don’t you have to be able to actually demonstrate that, if Trump is claiming that  Biden had absolutely no idea what was going on here, don’t you have to actually have evidence of that?” host Abby Phillip asked.

Here is Sheffield’s reply and the subsequent exchange:

SHEFFIELD: So, we have lots of evidence of Biden’s cognitive decline. He was calling on dead reporters in press conferences. He was shaking hands with ghosts that didn’t exist.

PHILLIP: What?

SHEFFIELD: Like he was shaking hands with the air. He didn’t know where to go. He had to be guided because he had no idea what was going on. He couldn’t do a basic sentence without looking at a large card.

PHILLIP: Ok, let’s say that all of this is true. Again, it’s a very specific allegation here. I mean, just on a basic level, you got to be able to actually show proof of the thing that you’re alleging, and there is no proof of any of this.

SHEFFIELD: Well, [the] AARP says that $28.3 billion of elder exploitation every year, FBI says $3.4 billion in internet crime against elders every year.

PHILLIP: So, that is proof that Biden used autopen to sign the pardons and he didn’t know about it?

SHEFFIELD: No, I’m just saying there’s a lot of evidence that elder abuse happens–

PHILLIP: Those are important statistics but it has nothing to do with this conversation.
