JD Vance Awkwardly Toasts Diet Mountain Dew With Newsmax Host: ‘This Is the Good Stuff’
Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance awkwardly toasted a Diet Mountain Dew with a Newsmax host on Thursday during a trip to the southern border.
Recounting a story about his mother’s drug overdose, and about the dangers of fentanyl crossing the southern border, Vance told Newsmax host Bianca de la Garza, “There are millions of Americans who could have a second chance with their loved ones if we make smarter decisions, and I know what it feels like when we make dumb decisions and people suffer.”
“Yes you do, first hand,” de la Garza replied, as Vance was handed a bottle of Diet Mountain Dew.
As he unscrewed the top of his bottle, Vance asked, “Should we toast here?” to which de la Garza replied, “Yes, we need to toast.”
“This is the good stuff here. High caffeine, low calorie,” remarked Vance, before taking a swig of the soda.
After de la Garza said, “When you’re out here, you need a little bit of everything,” Vance concluded, “Yes, you do.”
Vance was mocked last month after he bombed with a joke about liberals finding Diet Mountain Dew “racist” during his first stand-alone rally as former President Donald Trump’s 2024 running mate.
“Democrats say that it is racist to believe– well, they say it’s racist to do anything,” he quipped during the rally. “I had a Diet Mountain Dew yesterday and one today. I’m sure they’re going to call that racist too.”
Vance’s joke was met with near-silence and a few awkward laughs before he added, “I love you guys.”
