Javier Palomarez, the President and CEO of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, is a member of President Trump‘s diversity council, but he’s being very vocal today in response to reports the President will end DACA.
Acosta asked, “Will you stay on the president’s diversity council if he gets rid of DACA?”
Palomarez said, “That remains to be seen. I’m gonna work right up until the bloody end to try to convince this president to do the right thing by these 800,000 Dreamers who reside in this country.”
Acosta asked him again if he “may decide to leave that diversity council” if that doesn’t happen. Palomarez said, “That is correct, but again, Jim, I’m going to work with him and his administration.”
“These are the types of moments that define people, that define American leaders,” he continued, talking about Republican leaders as well as the President. “I hope they will step up to this challenge.”
Acosta brought up past comments from Trump about the heart he has for Dreamers and asked, “In your view, if he gets rid of DACA, is he showing great heart and is he showing that he loves these kids?”
Palomarez responded, “If he’s getting rid of DACA, he’s showing that he is a liar. He has said he’s going to try to protect the people in the DACA program, that he was focused on getting rid of criminals. We certainly support that piece of his thinking.”
Palomarez was critical of Trump’s Charlottesville remarks and publicly called on the President to fire Steve Bannon last month.
