George Papadopoulos’ Italian fiance has offered a public defense of her husband, and she insisted that his role in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign was of greater significance than former colleagues have cared to describe it.
In an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Simona Mangiante defend Papadopoulos’ energy policy credentials while refuting the notion that Papadopoulos was a low-level volunteer. She talked about how Papadopoulos “set up meetings with leaders all over the world” for senior campaign officials, and had direct communication with people like Michael Flynn and Steve Bannon.
“[He was] constantly in touch with high-level officials in the campaign,” Mangiante said. “He never took any initiative, as far as I know, [that was] unauthorized. All the initiatives had [the] blessing of the campaign.”
Ever since Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, various officials connected to Trump reacted to the news by minimizing his importance and saying his significance amounted to being the “coffee boy.” Trump has also dismissed Papadopoulos’ involvement in his campaign, which has reportedly upset the adviser who lied in an attempt to protect his boss.
Mangiante went on to defend Papadopoulos’ loyalty to the country, say he was “very brave and decent to take responsibility,” and she referred to him as “the first domino in the Russia investigation.”
