A source close to the investigation into George Papadopoulos has told reporters that the former Trump adviser lied to the FBI about his connections with Russia out of “blind loyalty” to the the president.
Papadopoulos’ guilty plea to investigators made waves throughout the political world last month, and it has raised new questions about the level of connectivity between the Trump campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 election. ABC reports that Papadopoulos deceived investigators because he was trying to stick to Donald Trump‘s line that the notion of collusion with Russian election interference is all “fake news.”
Even though Papadopoulos met with Trump and presented himself as an adviser and representative to the president, Trump has tried distancing himself from his old staffer in recent days. This distancing has reportedly upset Papadopoulos after everything he did to try to protect his old boss.
