Stars Invoke #MeToo, Stand With DREAMers in Politically Charged Oscars

The 90th Academy Awards were dominated by several social themes which have been hot topics.
Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel kicked off the show by praising a penis-less Oscar statuette, joking that we “need more men like him” in Hollywood.
The ABC late night host took some jabs at President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence during his monologue — although there wasn’t as much of a pile-on as there was last year. He also later joked that Russian President Vladimir Putin “didn’t rig” these awards.
Oscar presenters Kumail Nanjiani and Lupita Nyong’o, both who are immigrants, took a moment to praise DREAMERs who are at the center of the immigration debate.
“And like everyone in this room, and everyone watching at home, we are dreamers. We grew up dreaming of one day working in movies. Dreams are the foundation of Hollywood. And dreams are the foundation of America,” Nanjiani said. “And so – to all the DREAMers out there, we stand with you.”
There was much attention given to the #MeToo movement, especially when Ashley Judd, Annabella Sciorra, and Salma Hayek, three accusers of disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein, took to the stage to introduce a segment about diversity in film.
Finally, Frances McDormand, who won Best Actress for her performance in Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri, took a moment to praise all the female nominees, asking them to stand in unison in an effort to empower more women in film.
“Look around, ladies and gentlemen because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed,” McDormand told the crowd.
