Trump Unsure if Musk Plans to Fire Federal Workers Who Don’t Respond to Email: ‘I Guess You Get Fired’
President Donald Trump does not seem to know what Elon Musk’s plans are for federal employees who do not respond to an email Musk ordered sent to them.
On Saturday, Musk said all federal employees would receive an email from the Office of Personnel Management asking them to explain what they did last week. “Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation,” the billionaire Republican donor added, setting a deadline of 11:59 p.m. on Monday. The email was eventually sent, but without the “resignation” part. On Monday, it was reported that the OPM said responses were not mandatory.
On Tuesday, Trump took questions from reporters in the Oval Office, but he seemed unsure as to whether employees are now required to respond.
“It’s somewhat voluntary, but it’s also, if you don’t answer, I guess you get fired,” the president said.
“I’m still lost on that,” one reporter said.
“What it is, is, do people exist?” Trump continued. “We have this massive government with millions of people and nobody knows who’s working for the government and who’s not. So what they’re doing is they’re sending out a letter to everybody and they’re saying, ‘What were the things you did last week?’ I guess they ask for five. And if people are working, it’s easy. I could tell you five things I did last week. I could tell you five things I did six weeks ago, right?”
On Monday, Trump said employees who do not respond will be “semi-fired or fired,” whatever that means.
