WATCH: New CNN Ad Claims Coronavirus Masks ‘Not a Political Statement’ While Slamming Anti-Maskers

CNN rolled out its latest “Facts First” ad on Friday — with the network promoting mask wearing, and taking a shot at those who don’t wear masks.

The spot, which aired on Friday morning’s edition of New Day, shows a series of masks set against a plain, white backdrop, with piano music playing in the background.

“A mask can say a lot about the person who wears it,” a person says on a voice-over. “But even more about the person who doesn’t.”

The ad concludes with the message “Please wear a mask” on screen, followed by the CNN logo and “Facts First.”

The network also released a 15 second version of the commercial, in which a single mask is shown, with the accompanying voice-over stating, “This is a mask. It stops the spread of coronavirus. This is not a political statement. It’s a mask.”

The spots, first reported by The Wrap’s Lindsey Ellefson, recall the network’s original “Facts First” ads from 2017 — which seemed to take a swipe at President Donald Trump.

“This is an apple,” the voice-over said. “Some people might try to tell you that it’s a banana. They might scream, ‘banana, banana, banana,’ over and over and over again. They might put BANANA in all caps. You might even start to believe that this is a banana. But it’s not. This is an apple.”

The new commercials come as mask wearing has become a more partisan issue across the country. A recent Gallup poll shows 36 percent of Republicans “rarely” or “never” wear a mask while in public, compared with just 2 percent of Democrats. President Donald Trump called mask wearing “politically correct” in May, but changed his tune recently — wearing a mask in public for the first time earlier in July and calling the act “patriotic.”
