Watch Sarah Sanders Stumble Over Attempts to Explain Trump’s False Claims About U.S. Taxes
Over the past few weeks, as President Donald Trump has been selling the White House’s tax reform proposal, he’s consistently made the false claim that the United States is the highest taxed nation in the world. And the president once again repeated that falsehood today.
During today’s White House press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was grilled on Trump’s repetitive false claims about taxes by One America’s Trey Yingst. And she struggled to provide a satisfactory response, instead spending the exchange on ham-fisted attempts at evasion.
After the two had a brief back-and-forth over her earlier assertion that Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) “rolled out the red carpet” on the Iran Deal, Yingst then asked Sanders why Trump keeps saying America is the highest taxed nation in the world when it isn’t true.
“We are the highest tax, uhh, corporate tax in the developed economy — that’s a fact,” Sanders replied.
“But that’s not what the president said,” Yingst hit back, leading Sanders to repeat that the United States is the highest corporate taxed nation of the developed economies in the world.
“So that’s accurate,” Yingst declared. “But the president keeps repeating the claim that we are the highest taxed nation.”
Twice more, Sanders would repeat her corporate tax remark and insisting that is what Trump meant, causing Yingst to again say that is not what Trump said.
“Sorry, we’re going to have to agree to disagree,” the press secretary noted, moving on to another reporter.
