William McRaven Fires Back at Trump: I Admire Presidents ‘Who Uphold the Dignity of the Office’
Adm. William McRaven defended himself Sunday against President Donald Trump‘s claim that he’s a “Hillary Clinton backer,” swiftly denying the label in a statement to CNN.
The assertion came in Trump’s Fox News Sunday interview with Chris Wallace during which the president dismissed the man who oversaw the SEAL Team Six operation that killed Osama bin Laden, repeatedly telling Wallace that McRaven supports Clinton.
“I did not back Hillary Clinton or anyone else,” McRaven told CNN. “I am a fan of President Obama and President George W. Bush, both of whom I worked for. I admire all presidents, regardless of their political party, who uphold the dignity of the office and who use that office to bring the nation together in challenging times.”
The dust up occurred over Trump’s attacks on the press, which were the topic of discussion when McRaven was mentioned. The admiral has stood against the president’s treatment of the press, affirming to CNN that his position has not wavered.
“I stand by my comment that the President’s attack on the media is the greatest threat to our democracy in my lifetime. When you undermine the people’s right to a free press and freedom of speech and expression, then you threaten the Constitution and all for which it stands.”
