Oppenheimer And Poor Things Dominate At 77th BAFTA Awards

The crème de la crème of Hollywood descended upon London’s Royal Festival Hall Sunday for the 2024 BAFTA Awards that saw Oppenheimer, and the visually stunning Poor Things sweep up.

Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, received seven wins from 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, marking Nolan’s first-ever BAFTA win. The film’s stars, Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr, dazzled, taking home Best Leading Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

Emma Stone, the leading actress in Poor Things won Best Actress for her role as Bella, as the film itself picked up Best Production among its five accolades.

In a shocking turn, other high profile nominees like Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon left empty-handed.

The Zone of Interest, a disturbing film about the family of the commandant of Auschwitz living outside the death camp, won Best British Film and legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron making history as the first Japanese production to win Best Animated Film.

Rising stars were also recognised, with Kent actress Mia McKenna-Bruce winning the EE Bafta Rising Star award, and Savanah Leaf’s Earth Mama earning Best Debut, showcasing the industry’s bright future.

The 77th BAFTA event was hosted by Scottish actor David Tennant with Prince William’s presence in the audience adding some royal glitz, albeit without his wife Kate Middleton, who is recuperating from surgery.
