Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called for an urgent “sustainable ceasefire” in Gaza, highlighting the loss of civilian lives amidst Israel’s relentless assault.
Sunak’s plea comes amid mounting international outcry and a scathing criticism published by his former defence secretary, Ben Wallace, in the Daily Telegraph about the long-term ramifications of Israel’s current strategy which he called a “killing rage.”
Sunak, during his Scottish visit, echoed many of Wallace’s general concerns.
“Israel obviously has a right to defend itself against what was an appalling terrorist attack perpetrated by Hamas, but it must do that in accordance with humanitarian law,” the Prime Minister said. “It’s clear that too many civilian lives have been lost and nobody wants to see this conflict go on a day longer than it has to.”
Downing Street said a “sustainable ceasefire” means the end of Hamas’ presence in Israel, a halt to Hamas rocket fire, and the safe return of Israeli hostages. Meanwhile, Gaza’s health ministry reports over 19,000 deaths due to Israeli attacks, with a staggering 85% of the 2.3 million residents displaced.
Sunak joins a chorus of international leaders in his calls for a ceasefire, including his own Foreign Secretary David Cameron as well as French and German officials. US leaders have reiterated their calls for a “humanitarian pause” to facilitate hostage release and aid delivery but remain steadfast in their support for Israel.
