Conservative MP James Daly from Bury North sparked outrage Friday by declaring that most struggling children in his area are “products of crap parents.”
Daly was expressing the ideals of the New Conservatives group, a right-wing caucus that pitches for working-class conservatism that has member MPs from “red wall” constituencies across Northern England and the Midlands.
“Most of the kids who struggle in Bury are the products of crap parents, and so what do we do to try to address that issue?” he said. “On the left it would just be we’ll throw money at this and hope something sticks, somebody like me thinks about this more fundamentally.”
His blunt comment, however, made in an interview with the i newspaper, has been met with severe criticism from opposition figures.
Daly’s Labour rival for the area, James Frith, blasted the Tory MP for his disdainful view of the constituents, accusing him of overlooking the Conservative Party’s failure to foster economic growth. He branded the take an “insult.”
“Over the last 13 years the Conservatives have failed to grow our economy, protect our public services or provide opportunities for young people in Bury and across the UK,” Firth said.
Christian Wakeford, Labour MP for Bury South and Daly’s former Tory colleague, urged voters to remember these remarks at the next general election.
