WATCH: Awkward Moment Rishi Sunak And Dutch Leader Locked Out Of Downing Street

Telegraph reporters captured the moment that journalists cheered as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the outgoing Dutch leader Mark Rutte were left awkwardly stranded outside No 10 on Wednesday night.

The two leaders, who were set to discuss critical issues such as the Middle East, Ukraine, and illegal migration, found themselves momentarily locked out after posing for photographs on the iconic steps. The incident showed Sunak and Rutte, slightly bemused, trying to gain access to the famous black door, which remained unyielding, with Sunak pointing out the festive decorations in a bid to buy some time.

Eventually, someone inside opened up.

This unexpected hiccup may well be remembered as the last diplomatic engagement between Sunak and Rutte, as the latter steps down. Rutte, a four-time Dutch Prime Minister, announced his departure from politics following the collapse of his coalition government earlier this year, a fallout rooted deeply in immigration issues.

In prominent position to succeed him as premier is Geert Wilders, a right-wing political rival, who clinched a dramatic victory in the Dutch general election in November. Although, the formation of a coalition that would allow Wilders to become prime minister is facing challenges, as at least two potential partners have expressed concerns over certain policy commitments of his Party for Freedom, deeming them potentially unconstitutional.

Sunak, however, will be glad to know that they haven’t changed the locks on him just yet.

This article has been corrected after a previous version suggested Geert Wilders would succeed Rutte as premiere. This has not yet been confirmed.
