CBS’ Major Garrett Presses GOP Sen.: Is VA Scandal Become ‘Hyper-politicized’?
Face the Nation guest host Major Garrett pressed Senator John Thune (R-SD) Sunday morning over his colleague Richard Burr’s (R-NC) comments about veterans organizations not actively calling for Veterans Affairs Secretary General Eric Shinseki’s resignation. The Veterans of Foreign Wars responded in a stern letter to Burr Saturday, which Thune declined to directly address even as Garrett questioned him about it.
“The VFW called Senator Burr’s comments a ‘monumental cheap shot,'” Garrett said. “There are those who have expressed some nervousness about all this becoming hyper-politicized in a midterm election year. Is that what’s going on?”
“Look, there are going to be basic disagreements; there are different veteran service organizations that came to different conclusions about whether or not Secretary Shinseki ought to step aside,” Thune replied. “Basically this ought to transcend politics. This really is an issue that needs to be solved. …Right now, you’re just seeing a high level of frustration. The only way that we’re going to get to the bottom of this is to have that full blown investigation and then look at better ways of delivering health care services to America’s veterans.”
The American Legion has called for Shinseki’s resignation, but other veterans organizations have stood by the secretary.
