Breitbart Funder Rebekah Mercer Hits Steve Bannon in WSJ Op-Ed: Took Breitbart in ‘Wrong Direction’

Mysterious GOP megadonor Rebekah Mercer is speaking out in a rare op-ed — and she’s taking her rare opportunity in the public eye to take a stand against a prominent former ally.
In an op-ed published in Thursday’s Wall Street Journal (paywall protected), the reclusive Mercer — a minority stakeholder in Breitbart — made her opinion known of the site’s former chairman, Steve Bannon.
“Stephen Bannon, [Breitbart’s] former chairman, took Breitbart in the wrong direction,” Mercer wrote. “Now that Mr. Bannon has resigned, Breitbart has the opportunity to refine its message and expand its influence.”
Mercer, along with her husband Robert Mercer, have been major figures in Republican politics in recent years. The Washington Post reports that the couple has donated nearly $40 million to GOP candidates and super PACs since 2010.
“The Mercers laid the groundwork for the Trump revolution,” Steve Bannon told the New Yorker last year. “Irrefutably, when you look at the donors during the past four years, they have had the single biggest impact of anybody, including the Kochs.”
Indeed, the Mercers were key backers of President Donald Trump. And Rebekah reiterated her support for Trump in Thursday’s op-ed.
“I supported Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign because he promised to tackle entrenched corruption on both sides of the aisle,” she wrote. “I continue to support President Trump, which does not mean I agree with every position he has taken or every thought he has tweeted. I remain hopeful that he will continue striving to fulfill his campaign promises.”
