CNN: Protesters Shout Racial And Gay Slurs At Lewis And Frank (Update)

“Rising tensions on Capitol Hill” is a cliche in cable news, but it may never have been apt than today. With the House of Representatives currently negotiating a controversial vote on a Senate bill that aims to reform health care, protesters have gathered to voice their opposition to the bill. CNN’s Capitol Hill reporter Dana Bash reports of epithets being used towards John Lewis (D-GA) and Barney Frank (D-MA) by protesters that had been identified earlier as “Tea Party people.” Note – to clarify, Bash claims that her producer personally witnessed slurs used towards Frank.




We now have a very short clip of the protesters “kill the bill” towards Lewis as he walks towards the Capitol building, but no racial epithets can be heard.

    If this is true, it is wrong and should be condemned. I do note, however, that it’s hearsay. With all video cameras around (from the press, as well as flip video cams and iphones) nobody has a video of this behavior? I’m skeptical.

    No, that was not Dana Bash. It was Susan Roesgen. Dana Bash is a credible reporter. I don’t think she would deliberately make something up, but it is hearsay.

    This story just hit the wires about 30 minutes ago. There are some protest clips on youtube, but that is limited to about 3 that I found. The only thing I heard that was insulting was a woman saying “cowards”. I’m sure that there will be more clips funneling in throughout the day.

    btw, I think that the reason there isn’t more “diversity” at tea party events is pretty simple. something like 80-90% of black people support Obama, and most of them always will, because it’s not about what he believes or what he does, it’s always going to be about how he was the historical first black president. always.

    Racism is wrong. Homophobia is wrong. Spitting on someone is wrong. If any of those things were done by a select group of teapartiers today, they were wrong and deserve condemnation.

    I am not convinced that those things did happen. The only video I’ve seen of the supposed incident does not (as Colby stated above) contain any slurs. That is not dispositive, but it is probative.

    If it did happen, I am absolutely sure that it was tiny minority (as the video above clearly does establish). When you have an open air protest, there is not way to control who shows up. A few bad apples are not indicative of the whole group. I accord liberal protests the same presumption.

    Most importantly, whatever happened in Washington, D.C. today is not a reflection on me, who happens to be hundreds of miles away. If every single protester in D.C. today was a horrible racist, that would say absolutely nothing about my objections to Obamacare. People on this site my love me or hate, but I’m nobody doubts that I am a serious, reflective person and I do not form my opinions without all due consideration.

The chances that two reporters and three congressman would make this all up are, in my book, equal to the chances that a network newscast would broadcast fabricated memos supposedly showing that the sitting President of the United States had defied a direct order back in the 1960s and claim that the fabricated documents came from an “unimpeachable source,” when in fact they came from a source who had already been proven to have made false and defamatory claims about that same President on two prior occasions.

    And I realize that this is going to sound conspiratorial, but there are few things about that video that bug me. By way of background, I worked for a House member (a Democratic house member, by the way) for many years. I know that John Lewis is treated like a saint because of his background in the ciivl rights movement (which is commendable) but he is no saint. He is a whorish politician, just like 99.9% of his colleagues.

    The video is also strange for this reason. They are crossing over to the Capitol from the Canon building on the corner of Independence Ave and New Jersey Ave. I know it well. I made that walk many times a day for many years.

    First of all, there is an underground tunnel that runs between Canon and the Capitol building at that intersection. And when I say tunnel, it’s not a tiny, dark little tunnel. It’s HUGE. Two 18 wheelers could easily drive through that tunnel side by side. Why would they being walking outside instead of taking the tunnel on a day when there’s a huge protest outside? That’s what the tunnel is for, so members can get back and forth between the Capitol and the office buildings and avoid tourists (and rain).

    Also, it is clear from the video that they did not exit the Canon building at the doorway at the corner of Independence and New Jersey (which is the most direct route). They exited the Canon building at the East exit, and then walked up Independence avenue and crossed at the New Jersey Ave crossing. Why in the world would you do that? In other words, they essentially went out of their way to to walk past a “hostile” crowd for a much longer distance than they normally would (when, in fact they could have avoided the crowd entirely by taking the Canon tunnel).

    Maybe I sound like Oliver Stone playing the Zapruder film back and forth looking for the shooter on the grassy knoll, but something is fishy about it to me. Again, I’m not accusing anyone of lying, but the jury is still out for me.

They all said that they’ve seen and heard worse from their old protest days.

    I’m an African-American man over 40 years old.
    I’ve experienced a reality that you’re trying to deny exists. America was founded on WHITE MALE SUPREMACY.
    My ancestors didn’t swim across the Atlantic and volunteer to be slaves, yet Southern White Conservatives (Confederates) fought to the DEATH to keep them.

One would have to be a fool to think if a Capitol Hill Police Officer saw a Congressman being spat upon that he would not effect the arrest of said person immediately. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) issued a statement late Saturday saying that he was spit upon while walking to the Capitol to cast a vote, leading the Capitol Police to usher him into the building out of concern for his safety. Police detained the individual, who was then released because Cleaver declined to press charges.

    “The congressman was walking into the Capitol to vote, when one protester spat on him. The congressman would like to thank the U.S. Capitol Police officer who quickly escorted the other Members and him into the Capitol, and defused the tense situation with professionalism and care,” said Danny Rotert, a spokesman for Cleaver.

    Protesters outside the Capitol hurled epithets at Reps.
