Conservative Christian GOP Politician Caught Making Purchases At Canadian Gay Sex Shop

Five years ago, this kind of story might have shocked people. But this has basically turned into a political archetype, so the shock value is at least a little diluted. But regardless, the family-values mayor of a small town in Mississippi was recently caught billing $67 to taxpayers for an eyebrow-raising expense he made.

Mayor Greg Davis made a purchase at Priape, which considers itself “Canada’s premiere gay lifestyle store and sex shop.” Immediately after the purchase was made public through an audit of what Davis has been spending money on, he admitted he’s gay. However, Davis is unable to recall precisely what he purchased at the shop. In the past year, Davis divorced his wife Suzann, and in publicly coming out Davis admitted his homosexuality was something he’s struggled with.

In 2008, he ran for Congress in Mississippi’s first district on a family values platform. He lost both the special election and the general election to his Democratic challenger.

In addition to finding the $67 charge on Davis’ bill, the state auditor also found that the mayor racked up over $170,000 in food and drink. One meal in particular cost Davis over $2,000, including two bottles of wine worth over $400 each, but he left a $1,000 tip for his waiter. So say what you will about his conservative values, he’s clearly a generous man.

Is there ANYTHING more predictable then this story?

  • Mo Fokker

What is predictable, is teabagger-fundies continue to believe they have the ability to judge somebody’s commitment to their faith and family, simply through cheap rhetoric and written statements on campaign websites.

  • Anonymous

    my thoughts exactly…
i would be more surprised if it DID NOT happen on a regular basis..

you want to shock me? show me a charitable, selfless, honest and generous Christian..
    that will be a surprise..

When will these guys start buying American?

  • Anonymous

There are tens of millions of them, smarty pants. They would NEVER get the media’s attention in a positive way, though. Even Tim Tebow, who has given and raised millions to serve the poor (building a hospital, fighting AIDS, etc.) AND has helped put an awful NFL team into playoff contention, gets castigated for displaying anything close to “family values.”

The problem isn’t right-wing hypocrisy or the hypercritical ignorance of people like you, it’s a media that loathes Christians and will publicize anything to paint them in a negative light.

What I find to be foolish and all to common is the broad genrelizations about diverse groups of people.  Both sides do it, and it doesn’t help at all. It’s the kind of counterproductive foolishness that needs to be stricken from the conversation.
I’m left of center but I know a lot of fabulous conservatives who are great poeple. We just happen to disagree on certain issues.

btw; Sorry about your chapped ass. Hope you feel better soon.

    “One and all”

I’m sorry if you didn’t know this but Conservative Christian Republicans do not preach collectivism like the left does. They believe in taking individual action. That means you can only blame this one Christian Conservative Republican, this one individual, for the actions he had taken. It is only with the collectivist left can an idiot do something stupid and rightfully have his entire collective blamed. Example, The “liberal/collectivist” who took a shit on a cop car at OWS,  because of his actions I can rightfully say that all collectivist “liberals” are animals who shit in the streets. Another example, the reports of rape at OWS, all collectivist “liberals” are rapists.

BTW if you don’t like this correct analysis, than don’t be a “liberal”. Don’t be a collectivist. But if you do want to continue to be “liberal”, than just accept this. Take the bad with the good of being a collectivist.

This is one story, Mediaite, that you should be ashamed of printing – not that it’s not true, but that it encourages untrue and ugly stereotyping to people who are already blind with their bigotry and lack of knowledge.

  • Anonymous

You’re joking right. Conservatives are always accusing liberals of being “Godless”. Republicans say THEY are the Party of “Family Values” as though no one else has any values. The Republican Party is against gay marriage and was/is against the repeal of DADT. Republicans MARCH in lockstep. Look how they vote in Congress. Look how 99% of them signed a pledge to Grover Norquist.  And if you say otherwise then either you REALLY don’t pay attention or you’re not truthful.

  • Anonymous

Has he given Marcus a call?

  • Anonymous

Why should Mediaite ignore this story.  It shows that there are gays among us and they should not have to live in shame.  The military repealed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy and so should society at large.

  • Anonymous

  • Hout Bosques

“media that loathes Christians and will publicize anything to paint them in a negative light”

What utter nonsense. But it is true that the Recc party – Republican Closet Cases – just love to feed the media a steady stream of closet cases.

  • Anonymous

The real problem I see here is that this guy is charging such outrageous, unrelated things to the taxpayer.  I would think that even if he were a straight person, such personal items and personal entertainment would not be acceptable – particularly $400 bottles of wine – not to mention the $1000 tip to the waiter.  Did he find the waiter “cute” too?

Every time I hear about one of these “family values hypocrites”, it reminds me of the accidental death of the Baptist minister Gary Aldridge in Alabama who died in the wetsuits with a dildo up his rear.  Even though it sadly took his life, it just makes a mockery of “family values” and just proves the hypocrisy of the republican party.

Say it ain’t so, another Conservative Christian TEA-GOP-Republican saying he’s gay only after he is caught with his pants down, oops! This dude is one ladder step above Brush Himoff who repeatedly inserts mouth, rather mouth than you know what. Here’s the real issue that needs to be addressed. The elitist TEA-GOP-Republican fringe holding American’s hostage over taxes
while they defend the upper 1%-ers. After bailing out the banking industry which
caused the “Housing Bubble” and now the “Foreclosure
Crisis” under the Bush Administration’s recession, This “Do
Nothing” 112th Congress has the audacity to keep shutting down the economy
repeatedly as long as president Obama’s in office. These elitist
TEA-GOP-Republican fringe do not have a heart and care only for the upper crust
of the best off! What every American should do is call their Representative’s
and Senator’s in Washington every day and tell them to do their “Financial
Fiduciary Function” for the population of America, and not their puppeteers. The
in-action of this Congress has killed the “American Dream” for most middle class
and enlarged the lower class to it’s highest level in History. Why would these
elitist TEA-GOP-Republican fringe want to throw so many people out of work, take
their homes and kill their dreams? It’s because this elitist TEA-GOP-Republican
fringe have become bigoted since the election of the first black president!
President Obama has been up against a constant and repeated barrage of negative
name calling and other attacks in an effort to blame him for the inability and
un- excusable non-efforts of the current Congress under
Boehner-McConnell-Ryan-Cantor! Every American should do is call their
Representative’s and Senator’s in Washington every day and tell them to do their
job for the general public and not the super-elite rich!

Naaa, I’m used to the family values hypocrisy, what gets me is the quickness with which some people jump on the liberal-gotcha- media. As if they lured him into this gay sex shop, tricked him into springing for the $400 bottles of wine, then coerced him into leaving a $1000 tip. How is any of this the media’s fault?

  • Anonymous

In part that is true, but the stereotype comes from all this “fake christian” crap then you see actions such as this.

  • Anonymous

There certainly are a lot of wonderful people out there that are Christian. There are also wonderful people from every other religion or no religion at all, just as there are bad people. What stands out to me is the fact that the title of Christian really doesn’ t tell you anything about a person’s character.

I noticed more politically dutring the Bush campaign. The GOP sought out conservative Christians and started making promises on socially conservative issues. People like the man in the article are somewhat expected now. You’d think people might begin to realize how it indicates that homosexuality is not a choice. Although Christiabns have done a lot of good work, the false teachings about homosecuality being evil, and perverted and an abomination, has madfe people like the one in the article afraid to acknowledge their own true selves.
Imagine being indoctrinated into the hommosexuality is perverse club. by your family , your church and friends, and then you begin experienceing those feelings and are terrified someone will find out. A lot of innocent people have been hurt and families torn apart by those false teachings.

There are literally tens of millions of good, honest Christians in this country. Odds are, if you went out of your house today, you saw several.

I’m Jewish and I know this. There are far more good of all religions than bad. It is only the bad ones that make news. When was the last time you saw a headline that said, “Man does nothing wrong or annoying.”

To be fair, every religion has its extremists and many, many great evils have been committed in the name of religion by false leaders and such.

And on “family values,” the ones I learned at home were if someone was hungry, you fed him or her, homeless, you put him or her up, and I never could make myself feel better by dumping on others.
