Fukushima Plant Workers Evacuated After Smoke Rises From Unit 3 Reactor Building
The Fukushima 50 – the name given to the 180 Japanese workers, working in shifts of 50, valiantly trying to keep the Fukushima Daiichi plant’s reactors and exposed fuel rods from leaking radiation – have been evacuated from the plant after a plume of gray smoke began rising from one of its reactor units, specifically from the unit 3 reactor building’s dried-up fuel storage pool.
The cause of the smoke – and, thus, any possible consequences of being exposed to it – are not yet known. Nuclear safety agency officials are looking into the cause.
As the New York Post reports, health concerns related to the plant’s radiation leaks have also spread to possible contamination of food products like spinach, milk, canola and chrysanthemum greens. Iodine has also turned up in Tokyo’s tap water.
