Geraldo On Rolling Stone‘s Michael Hastings: “A Terrible Thing That He Has Done”

video

In the eyes of Fox News anchor Geraldo Rivera, the real villain in the whole McChrystal controversy (which has lead to a rather dramatic change in command of the Afghanistan war) isn’t the chatty General (and his staff.) No, the real bad guy in all of this (according to Geraldo) is the writer of the investigative report, Rolling Stone magazine’s Michael Hastings. Say what?

Geraldo compares Hastings’ time spent with the General and staff to “putting a rat in an eagle’s nest,” further claiming that most of what was told to the reporter was most likely shared in a “chummy” context. Hmmm. And here we were thinking that this was a terrific moment for the legacy of investigative journalism.

Geraldo knows that rat role so well. But who says that the general was not using the Rolling Stone, why else would the eagle have a rat, at the top of a tree, in his nest? The general always wanted to go out in a blaze of glory, perhaps he was merely laying his cards on the table and daring Obama to act, and making his case directly to Obama’s base through the Rolling Stone. Obama stood up to him, like Truman would have.

Geraldo Rivera is dumber than dirt and wouldn’t know a real journalist if he tripped over one. The rat isn’t Hastings it’s Obama who put his massive ego ahead of the national interest. Obama has proven himself to be a fool.

Ah, the talking point of the day”Truman” repeats itself here. Rush played a montage of the lamestreamers today using the “Truman” comparison. Too funny. Group think at its finest. Snicker.

I have mixed feelings about that Val, in some ways I agree completely – Stanley was just using Rolling Stone as much as Rolling Stone was using Stanley.

As for Colby’s comment on “the legacy of investigative journalism” now rests in Rolling Stone — not sure what to make of that comment.

Weirdly enough, Rachel Sklar posted a short article that surmised whether the General and the journalist got stuck in Europe based upon the Icelandic volcano ash “after effect”.

Perhaps the two got comfortable over the time…. versus “embedded” and “certain quotes” were said.
Regardless, Geraldo is jealous that he didn’t “break” the story.

For the life of me, I can’t find that article since on this site.

Like everyone else on fox, Geraldo doens’t seem to understand what journalism is. Stick to Capone’s empty vault types of stories buddy. When it comes to journalism, you’re now out of your league. A really sad turn for him. I remember the investigative report Geraldo did on the Willowbrook nursing home in Upstate New York. for ABC News. It was heart breaking and he won the Peabody award. He hasn’t won the Peabody since he went to fox and he’s not likey to win one there if he thinks what Hastings did was terrible.

The General had to have known what he was doing. No one would allow a reporter to be with them for some time without establishing the ground rules. He could have easily said you can report on what we do, but no quotes or paraphrases unless I say they are for “the record.”

Rox, is that where Geraldo discovered you?

Geraldo just became the precursor/embodiment of the story teller becoming more important than the story.

After a while, everybody accepted that as the only way to report a story. Sometimes, journalists still report what they see and simply report facts.

    Ask questions.

If Geraldo got any greener with envy, he’d turn into Margaret Hamilton in “The Wizard of Oz” or, at the very least, the Hulk minus the muscles. For someone whose investigative career ended in Capone’s vault, he should just keep his mouth shut. Had Rivera been fortunate enough to be in Hastings’ position, “Mums-the-Word” would not have been his modus operandi. He would have spilled his guts and everyone else’s.

Anyone who expects Rolling Stone to offer sympathetic coverage to a four star general has been spending too much time at the medical marijuana store.

It does pretty much blow that a left-wing rag like Rolling Stone has destroyed the career of a great general and potentially altered the course of history. That said, you have to blame McChrystal for letting that d-bag in the door to begin with.

It’s a fine old American military tradition to court discharge through insubordination to make a point, but this might be the first time it was done inadvertently. Now that Gen. Stanley McChrystal is free from command, perhaps he should consider retiring and running for office, or at least doing a Sarah Palin.

I agree with you completely. He is obviously a disciplined and intelligent man who had to have known what he was doing. I’m not totally convinced that they all just got so chummy with the reporter that they let down their guard, resulting in some “gotcha” reporting. The General has to be more savvy than that. He had to have understood the implications of his comments. I’m not sure what to make of it, but I feel there has to be much more to this situation than has been made public.

Rolling Stone did real journalistic work, while others sat around twiddling their thumbs. Everyone else is just jealous that RS was able to break this story and make real news.

On the contrary, I think Michael Hastings has done both countries a great service. He exposed the hypocrisy in McChrystal’s inner circle and demonstrated that he was not a “team player”. It is important that both civilian and military work together and coordinate activities to strengthen the afghan society. We chose to bring this war to the people of afghanistan, we botched it because the armchair warriors- Bush/Cheney had the ambition to take on Iraq. We owe the afghan people our best efforts and McChrystal was not delivering.

Geraldo was right. Michael Hastings is nothing but a rat. Hastings is a little man who will never be more than a hack who destroyed the career of a decent man who has served his country.

Some terrific moments for the legacy of investigative journalism can turn ‘ratty’.
