It Begins: Republicans Will Introduce Legislation To Cut NPR’s Federal Funding

NPR logoIn the wake of Juan Williams-gate, supporters of Williams have begun to demand that the federal government “defund” the news organization formerly known as National Public Radio. Sarah Palin explained the reasoning behind that demand in a Facebook note yesterday: NPR shouldn’t get support because it’s “unable to tolerate an honest debate about an issue as important as Islamic terrorism.”

Now Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina has announced that he’s planning to introduce legislation aimed at taking away NPR’s federal backing. And DeMint isn’t alone—FoxNews.com reports that former governor and Fox News host Mike Huckabee, as well as Rep. Peter King of New York, are also calling for the government to stop giving NPR money. According to King, “NPR has disgraced itself by caving into CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) and by firing Juan Williams for exercising his right of free speech… This is political correctness carried to its extreme form.”

For the record, NPR says that less than 2 percent of its total funding actually comes directly from the federal government. The rest is a combination of grants (like the $1.8 million George Soros recently forked over), station fees, and corporate sponsorships. So, as Gawker’s Adrian Chen wryly notes, even without federal funding, “NPR will still exist—only their fund-raising drives will be that much more obnoxious.” Food for thought!

all this total media bullshit over a guy 99% of the country hadn’t even heard of and if they did, couldn’t really give a shit about. so fucking ridiculous. such a in the beltway, east coast bullshit story. oooohhhh, NPR fired him. big deal. ooooh, fox signed him to a new contract. so stupid and lame. not a story by next monday.

and btw, who the fuck really cares what DeMint says? Everyone knows the guy is a loon. OF COURSE he’s gonna say stupid shit before the election and OF COURSE nothing will be done AFTER the election. you media are so easily swayed by such nonsense and yet act surprised when the future promised actions never come to fruition.

and lastly, why the fuck is it so hard to login on this website? i tried 5 times on chrome and nope, tried once on firefox, no problem. could you guy maybe spend a nickel and make it easier to login? it’s an absolute nightmare.

Agreed. Defund all right wing talk radio with this bill at the same time. It’s the only fair thing to do.

  • Cancon2

So, they should kill all funding of this sort everywhere. The CBC in Canada takes in over a Billion IN TAX dollars and we have to live with their bullshit endlessly and no one watches. Hell, if they did not have Hockey on Saturday nights, they would be shutting the lights off tonight. The BBC, man, even the guy who runs that runs that joke admitted it was a leftist looney bin. George wants it npr) so bad, he can taste it. They should be investigating the terms of that gift today and in that it was a “jounalist specific gift, then just change the name of the website and doors today. GPR , it works. You make no sense. Try some critical thought. Weigel and Williams are not comparable in anyway whatsoever. Juan didn’t express an opinion but a visceral thought. NPR’s Juan Williams says – “Look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on a plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.”

NPR’s Nina Totenberg says – “If there is retributive justice, (GOP Senator) Jesse Helms will get AIDS from a transfusion, or one of his grandchildren will get it.” On the same show she said of Army General Jerry Boykin for saying that the war on terrorism is a Christian crusade against Muslims, “I hope General Boykin is not long for this world.”

Which comments are worse, and/or more biased, and/or more ethically wrong? NPR’s given reason for firing Williams is complete bullshit.

Almost every well know liberal in the nation has spoken up for Juan Williams.

NOT here. The libs that post here are still defending NPR and attacking Juan. The truth is the folks that post here are not just libs they are the EXTREME left. They are NUTS.

Everyone must learn that these folks are the bigots, racists and homophobes. They support the terrorists against this country every time they can. The support Mosque at Ground Zero. They lie about Beck, Hannity and Limbaugh every day.

Never, never pay attention to anyone on the left that tells you that any statement you make is biggoted, racist or homophobic.
Never give credibility to anything Glynnis, Tommy or Martel writes about these subjects.

I have never made a racist, biggoted or homophobic statement in my life and I don’t let the left make any judgements about what I say. These folks are not qualified to be the bigot police.

DeMint can say that he’ll introduce legislation because he’s facing Alvin Greene in next week’s election. There really isn’t much doubt that he’s in the safest seat in America. But to say that one will introduce legislation doesn’t actually do anything; it doesn’t mean that if introduced, it’ll actually make it to the floor and it doesn’t make it pass.

Unless such legislation is wrapped into some kind of big, omnibus bill that cuts funding to a wide spectrum of areas, if it were to come to a vote, I doubt it would pass either and it’d have an especially hard time getting through the Senate.

Right now for a tea party candidate in a safe seat, it doesn’t cost anything for him to say it and because it’ll get play on the conservative airwaves, it could help motivate the base, but it really means nothing, at all.

Corp for Public Broadcasting and the NEA need to be eliminated from the federal budget. That will kill NPR:

NPR receives no direct federal funding for its operations, but between 1% and 3% of its $160-million budget comes from competitive grants awarded by publicly funded entities such as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since 2009, NPR has received $8 million in competitive grants from the CPB for technology development and journalism initiatives. It also received a one-time grant of $78 million between 2007 and 2009 to upgrade satellite technology.

Local NPR stations receive $90 million in annual appropriations from the CPB that amount to about 10% of their revenue, on average.

@paulmdoro: Another question would be whether all of Williams’ internet supporters would be as riled-up, if he had made the comments on the “Today Show” and not O’Reilly. Pretty much every time anyone utters Fox or one of its stars, there’s an army on both sides who jump into action, but if the “offense” had occurred elsewhere, I don’t think they would’ve reacted the same.

    IMHO

“Who are the managers of color at NPR?” NABJ President Kathy Times and Vice President/Broadcast Bob Butler asked NPR’s president, Vivian Schiller.

“What is NPR doing to recruit and groom African Americans for positions in management? Of the 68 members on your corporate team and behind-the-scenes staff, only eight are people of color:

    •”4 African Americans,
    •”2 Hispanic Americans,
    •”1 Iranian American
    •”1 American from South Asia.

“That translates to about 12 percent. Your organization benefits from listener support, corporate donations and tax dollars from the Corporation of Public Broadcasting and should reflect the diversity of the community you serve. The minority population of the United States is approximately 32 percent.”

    http://mije.org/richardprince/nabj-questions-npr-diversity

Of course they didn’t have the benefit of reading the comments of the leftist geniuses on Mediaite. If they had read them, they would know their report was wrong.

  • ModerateMan

The national version of NPR gets only 2% of its funding from the federal government. It’s the local stations that get a ton of help from the federal treasury in an assortment of ways. There are a lot of local NPR stations that are going to take the brunt of the hit from the idiot decisions of the national management. That’s the real story.

And yes…. it’s kind of absurd for the all white management of NPR to fire its only black male on-air talent for being a “bigot”.

  • RazorsEdge

Think the issue here is NPR receives some fed funding that opens the door for taxpayers, politicians and special interest can debate whether to defund or not. Take the public funding away and it only becomes bitching fest.

If say Fox news had 2% of their “total funding” came from Fed govt, then I’m pretty certain their would also be a push and legislation to defund them as well.

The Fed govt decided at some point to help fund the likes of NPR and the fed govt can decide to defund NPR. The Fed funding just provides opportunity to politicize/scrutinize and legislate

  • lane

I think the easy answer here is to simply obtain the resignation of CEO Shiller. Assuming its simply poor current management, this whole de-funding process can end quickly.

Any person’s firing or contract termination needs to be handled thoughfully and carefully, and Juan’s was neither. By phone, then in public, speaking of his ‘phsiciatrist or ‘publicisit was disgusting and disparaging. She’s opened NPR to big-time lawsuit liability based on her extremely unprofessional conduct. She also added pain and suffering to an already painful process.

If NPR gets little public funding, then NPR should voluntarily stop applying for these grants.

“Pretty sure”?? Every leftist asshole from the President of the United States right on down to the idiot leftist commenters on Mediaite want to shut Fox News down. Those fools don’t need an excuse, their hatred of Fox is blatant and overwhelming.

PS: Fuck all of you-Fox News isn’t going anywhere!

  • whytee

I think Juan Williams wants a piece of that big Fox pundit money. You can’t really blame him for making this move. I think generally he’s pretty balanced, so I thought the statement was out of character for him. He’s also extremely smart about strategy.

Defunding NPR is the GOP cutting off its nose to spite its face. The NPR shows I listen to daily almost always have representatives from the Heritage Foundation, Cato Institute, and any number of think tanks and organizations across the right wing spectrum. In fact, other than hearing second or third generation versions of their talking points through internet commenters, these NPR shows are really the right wing think tank’s only access to someone like me as a listener.

  • felixw

The CEO of NPR had to send out an internal memo apologizing to NPR insiders for causing this PR disaster during pledge week.

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/10/21/raw-data-npr-internal-memo-juan-williams/

This has turned out to be a huge mistake on the part of the leftwing media. NPR is now clearly marked as an advocate of censorship. Fox News is the clear champion of freedom of speech.

    A music reviewer

Some other guy with 3 commentaries to his credit.

Talk about getting smacked down! It’s no surprise that you want to take a comment by me that was satire pointing out the rank bigotry of NPR and try 2 pretend that i’m a racist. You old liberals stale and know one cares what you think of us. Your part of the problem jerk off.

You are right! Just quickly – is NPR racist or sexists? I know having black women as political commentators is not as good as Juan – big, strong black man but maybe NPR is both! Racists for firing Juan and sexists for not having other black men doing political stuff. I mean all that gay “song and dance” stuff the other black guys do is the crap liberals like.

Yuuuupppp, old Jim Demented offers up another worthless piece of legislation. While his state is sinking in a quagmire, he’s out there doing his best to screw a news organization that’s about the only listenable entity on the airwaves. Williams knew they didn’t like his connection with FAUX news and finally sank himself. This was a personal opinion, but reflected on NPR directly. They should have warned him and probably should have listened to the rest of the piece. He’s gonna make more $$$$$$ anyway with FAUX anyways.

Well, when you hear someone from the Cato Institute give a “fact” which you can easily research to discover it’s a half-truth, that tends to make one skeptical of their “facts.” But they’re a think tank to advance the goals of big business even at the costs of the commons, national security or whatever, so I understand why they do it — they make no illusions about their agenda. I think it’s far worse when journalists knowingly assay half-truths.

Boring? No no, please don’t say that and hurt my feelings. Please come back and be my friend.
Oh loser – you really are just getting your ass kicked huh? I like this “serious talk” side. Now, will only say this once – read my posts before I started picking on you. When I say read, I mean READ. Then, read your own post and you will realize that you were just incorrect in your claim. Simple.
If you don’t see light, come back and be wrong again. When I come back online, I’ll take 3 seconds, smack you around again and get you all worked up over your own stupidity. Deal?

The government has no business spending funds that could be far better used for other purposes. CPB should get no taxpayer funds, let PBS and NPR fend for themselves. With the choice available across so many platforms, the time for public subsidy is past.

While in theory an argument could certainly be made, but in rural America there aren’t as many options and last time I looked, they were wicked expensive.

  • WilsonTheHeretic

Good. The Right needs to start waging outright war on these dishonest outfits. Here’s hoping NPR is the first casualty in the assault. Let them crawl to Soros for more filthy lucre if they can’t cut it int he free marketplace.

I would imagine no!. You move in many retarded circles. You told me that your aunt was crazy so I assume you have lots of experience. You are the bestest retard out there. Hows that for a compliment? See, I am nice to you and go on and start calling people names. I was serious when I told you that I will comment more on the boards now and seek you out for more smackdowns. You are a good sport. (and I am serious about this – you have been fun)

  • BobHahn

OK, so the Republicans will win big in November, accidentally forget to vote any money for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting next year, and the various “public” broadcast entities will make up the less than 10% of their budgets from other sources, hopefully more pledge drives since I don’t listen to NPR and wish as many pledge drives as possible on the liberals who do.

It’s not “absurd”, however it could be considered “ironic”

and since when did the color of someone’s skin protect them from breeching their contract?

  • timcajun

Williams has every right to his free speech. This did go to far! On the other hand scumbag DeMint will use this to cut funding to a non-bias network that he doesn’t like! He doesn’t care for facts, just evil and hate!

If you want to compete in the arena of ideas, support yourself! Why do these types insist on sucking on the teat of America? They just got $l.8million from Soros so they don’t need a dime now. And, if you agree to what they say and how they it, you are also a bigoted uberleft imbecile….period! I don’t care what side of an aisle you’re on, but, to talk about people like the haters do on NPR, MSNBC, New York Times, The New Yorker, Atlantic Journal and only slightly milder on ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, HLN, Los Angeles Times, Time magazine and Newsweek, is more than unAmerican, it is not human. So, we’re left with the question: just what type of hominids are these?
Were they hatched in some deep hole in a cave somewhere? Where do they live, under rocks, garbage, in dark and dank alleys? Please, consider what it takes to have so much hate in your soul. Whether you believe in a God or not is your business, but, you should talk to a doctor about all that hate spilling bile in your system. Can’t be good for the body or the soul.

You total freaking MORON. Conservative talk radio receives NO public funding. They don’t need it because THEY can get sponsors for their broadcasts. NPR should be allowed to go the way of Airhead Amerika.

As for George Soros, he is a hate-filled miserable creature who knows he cannot take his fortune with him when he croaks. The mean things he does are out of spite for the fact he is mortal. He’s 80 years old and the clock is ticking.

    FleshBomb (really?) says:
“You think Soros loves America. You are another example of the proverbial useful idiot.”

I’ve not seen or heard of any evidence to the contrary, have you? Want to know who the useful idiots really are? Those working under communist-supporting Rupert Murdoch.

    http://www.sharethisurlaboutglennbeck.com/2010/06/glenn-becks-boss-faction-unto-himself.html

Now, a much better starting point for the subject of useful “idiot” really, to the real world of facts, is Glenn Beck the rodeo clown turned self-appointed nation’s preacher. That useful “idiot” is helping usher in plutocracy and ushering out our democratic Republic. I’m more conservative than Glenn Beck!

    The Real Royal King says:
“I am not sure that a lurch to the left by the Democrats is inevitable. The rightward trajectory of the Republicans is going to free up space in the middle. I think Democrats may take up that space.”

I’ve read analysis by Paul Waldman and heard on some show that this next Congress will be more divided than the one we have if the Republicans take over there.

There is only one better argument for voting for Democratics than to realize that no domestic issues will get resolved if the R’s control Congress. Instead progress already made will get defunded, they will attempt to shut the gov’t down, NPR will get slashed and some moron or two will want to impeach Obama because he hasn’t personally shown some Tea Party Congressman from the state of Dumbfukistan his birth certificate. Everyone who wants a dysfunctional government should vote Republican Nov. 2nd.

The biggest reason to unseat Republicans is because of the Dred Scott decision of our time, i.e. CU v FEC. Everyone who wants to have a government of the rich, for the rich and by the rich (plutocracy) should vote for R’s this November. That’s the overriding issue of this and probably the next elections. The Party of Lincoln has become, ever since Ronald Reagan, the Party of “Don’t tax the rich” and to hell with the middle class. The data supports this argument.

Spread this far and wide. Take 10 minutes. Using e-mail, FB, Twitter, etc, please share this URL with every undecided and independent voter you know. Have them share it. Glenn Beck was caught hobnobbing with the plutocrats. Share this URL:

I changed my mind. Beck’s not a useful idiot. That’s why I added the quotations used above. I do not think that he’s stupid. Ignorant? Yes, but not stupid. He’s an entertainment genius. The Tea Party’s “history” teacher is a useful tool.
