Miley! Kate! Michelle! Our Top Fashion Scandals of the Decade

Oh, I know you love a good scandal. How do I know this? Because everyone does. A good scandal amuses us, indulges our schadenfreude and distracts us from other more ‘real' and depressing news stories. And as someone who studies trends and fashion news all day long, I can tell you the fashion world has some good ones. So as the first decade of the 21st century comes to a close, I decided to make a list of my top 10 favorite fashion-related scandals. I’ve included any story involving clothes or relating to the fashion industry. Many of these stories were ridiculous, but they got the headlines and we couldn’t get enough of them. And the decade’s not even over — we've got a few more weeks to discover this decade’s own ‘blue dress’! But in the meantime, we've got Naomi, Kate, Miley, Martha, Bjork, Michelle and more.... ************************ Former Johnny Depp lover, actress and general bad-ass Winona Ryder shocked the world when she was arrested for shoplifting in December 2001. Ryder was caught on the security cameras swiping over $5,000 worth of loot from Saks in Beverly Hills. Ryder then had the book thrown at her with probation, community service, drug counseling, fines and restitution. She then dyed her hair blonde and stared in an Adam Sandler movie. Now she's Spock's mom. Pretty decent comeback. Naomi Campbell may have been one of the hottest supermodels of the 90s, but the in Aughts she began to reveal her ugly side. First Campbell was sued in 2000 for allegedly beating an assistant. Then again in 2003 for throwing a phone at another assistant. Finally in 2006 she got slapped with a felony charge for throwing yet another (Swarovski crystal-encrusted) phone, this time at her housekeeper’s head. She eventually plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge, was forced to clean the subway where she A) wore stiletto boots and B) still looked amazing. Speaking of 90s super models, Kate Moss, the iconic poster child for 1990s heroin chic look, found herself at the center of a scandal involving a different controlled substance. In 2005 British tabloid the Daily Mirror published photos of Moss snorting cocaine accompanied by the massive headline “Cocaine Kate”, thus getting her dropped from multiple ad campaigns. However, because she is a supermodel and not, say, a kindergarten teacher, the whole cocaine-party-girl thing didn't really hurt her image and she quickly bounced back, signing on a Dior campaign and landing the cover of W in November 2005. However, Moss created something of a mini-scandal a week ago when she was quoted in Women’s Wear Daily saying “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.” Hilarious, Kate. Obnoxious and untrue, but hilarious. >>>NEXT: Miley, Martha and Bjork's Swan-Tastic Oscar Dress In 2008 photographer Annie Leibovitz came under fire after her images of pouty-lipped, tousled-haired, half nekkid 15-year old Disney star Miley Cyrus were published in Vanity Fair. Lebowitz claimed that the shots had artistic merit and that Cyrus’s parents were on the shoot, but this did little to assuage the wrath of the scandalized press and public who viewed the shots an attempt to move some magazines and launch Cyrus into grownup leading lady land. Which she has since joined rather enthusiastically (pole dance, anyone?). In 2004 when Martha Stewart showed up to court where she was being charged with securities fraud (among other things) it was her bag that made the incriminating statement. Stewart was clutching a Hermes Birken bag which retails for approximately $10,000 and radiates power, elitism, class and privilege. Not necessarily what one wants to project when trying to win the hearts and minds of the jury. But seriously, what was she supposed to do, carry a 'I Heart Pies' totebag? She's Martha fricking Stewart for goshsakes. In 2007 shares of the Canadian sportswear company Lulu lemon (LULU) tanked after it was reported in the New York Times that the company's Seacell line that were supposedly made up of special seaweed fibers were shown to have no traces of seaweed at all. The tag claimed that the seaweed “releases marine amino acids, minerals and vitamins into the skin upon contact with moisture.” However, the company eventually managed to bounce back, because after all, even without the use of certain high priced organic fibers, the clothes still make your butt look awesome. Bjork showed up the the 2001 Academy Awards wearing a swan dress. That's it. That's the entire scandal. The now infamous dress was not only panned by Joan and Melissa, it also has made an appearance on pretty much every worst dressed list ever. Bjork donated the dress to Oxfam and it was put up for auction on Ebay in 2005. >>>NEXT: Nipplegate, Palingate, Sleevegate Nipplegate. On Febuary 1, 2004 during the Super Bowl half-time show Janet Jackson's decal covered boob popped out, scandalizing our football watching nation and introducing the term wardrobe malfunction into the everyday lexicon. In 2008 then Vice-Presidential candidate and self proclaimed hockey mom Sarah Palin caused quite a little stir when word got out that she spent $150,000 on clothes and stuck the RNC with the bill. Last moth, the Palin stylist came out with her own version of the story. Sleevegate, aka Michelle Obama's right to bare arms, aka Michelle Obama daring to wear sleeveless dresses apparently was a big deal to some people. People that are most likely jealous of our first lady's awe-inspiring limbs. Seriously, folks. These arms even have their own tumblr. What do you think? Did we miss any?
