If the Mediaite staff truly believes our armed forces are America’s best, then why don’t they feature more stories of our heroic fighting men and women? I’ve been reading this site since it’s inception and I’ve never come across anything about the Marines in Helmand Province, or about how 3rd BDE, 25th ID headed back into the lion’s den of the Korengal Valley this past summer. Chattering non-entities like Toure are the subject of dozens of articles, yet unless the story involves Justin Timberlake or Stephen Colbert, Mediaite is more or less a military-free zone. Furthermore, if behavior such as this is far outside the mainstream of a military you claim to respect, why should it be a huge story?

Everyone who said I was wrong to call the men “jackasses” is probably right. I didn’t have the right to judge them so quickly for something I have no ability to understand. I can judge the act itself, without judging the men (whom I don’t know) behind it.

That being said, I have to disagree with Doherty. Our site is specifically designed to cover things in the media. That’s a broad umbrella but that’s what it is. So we wouldn’t typically cover, say, a big military operation. But, if someone involved in the media says something interesting or controversial while they were covering that operation, that would be our purview.

Even with that being the case, we do have quite a bit of positive content about all sorts of service men and women on our site. The stuff we tend to cover, again, is what has become or is becoming viral on TV or social media so that’s why you are going to see a lot of instances involving celebrities. I appreciate the response. I understand that Mediaite is first and foremost a media analysis site (the name would be rather counter-intuitive if it wasn’t). However there are plenty of well-known war correspondents: Michael Yon, Michael Totten, Sebastian Junger (Vanity Fair), C.J. Chivers (NY Times), John Burns (NY Times) to name a few, and yet their work is never analyzed on this site. It’s just my opinion, but I find it odd that U.S. troops are currently engaged in a decade-long war where there has been a significant amount of reporting from all major media outlets and Mediaite seems manifestly more interested in the likes of Dan Savage and the aforementioned Toure.

P.S. I noticed that Mediaite is looking for someone to write on women’s issues. Is there no money in the budget to recruit someone to write about the War on Terror or veterans’ issues?

Anyone who has read the classic, “With the Old Breed” by Eugene Sledge, would know that this is not a new practice. I don’t excuse the Marine. When you put people in kill or be killed situations, acts of this nature, and worse, will take place. Unless you plan on changing human nature, there isn’t a way to stop it. It needs to be remembered, whether you like it or not, you are supporting an effort that will result in untold human suffering.

Though, I do think it is worth noting that in the past several conflicts, even and including Vietnam, the atrocities carried out by American GI’s were almost always the exception, not the rule. The same can not be said of the Japanese, the Germans, the Vietcong or the 6th century taliban that our boys battle today.

I also try to keep in mind that I have never been to war and not feared for my life. I don’t know what it is like to be in that situation and what it can do to a person’s sense of what is right and wrong.  It is very easy for you to judge when you are sitting in the safety of your home behind your keyboard. I will not pass judgement nor shed a tear or lose any sleep over this and will not stop supporting our troops.

If you feel so strongly about it, serve your country, maybe then your voice will matter.  Until then, you are no more important than those dead and being pissed on.

What also is striking is the fact that the US slaughtered over 100k innocent men, women and children, and you hardly see it in any media. Yet soldiers piss on some dead terrorists and this is what gets everyone upset.  I guess to assuage the cognitive dissonance of dead children we call it “collateral damage” and tell ourselves all is good.

If you read my posts you will see where I stand on this issue as a whole.  That said this was not an act of cowards.  The impact on war to the human condition is well documented and these actions are a physiological reaction to the dehumanizing impact war and the killing have on individuals and groups.  Dehumanizing the enemy to relieve the cognitive dissonance is pretty common on the battle field and has always been.  The truly guilty and cowardly people here are the leaders in the country who continue to put young men and women onto the battle field for their personal glory or some doctrine of spreading freedom to the unwashed.  Unfortunately, these Marines will be the only individuals held accountable for the actions of the real villains.
