North Korea Fires On South Korea, Killing Two South Korean Marines

Think that there is far too much news about Bristol Palin‘s “controversial” success on the reality show Dancing With the Stars or TSA pat-downs? Well now there appears to be a real international crisis unfolding in the Korean peninsula. During South Korean maritime military drills, North Korea fired mortar shells towards the S. Korean troops, reportedly injuring 15 soldiers and killing two.

According to CNN.com:

Seoul, South Korea (CNN) — In a sharp escalation of hostility along their disputed sea border, North Korean and South Korean forces traded fire Tuesday, a deadly skirmish that jacked up diplomatic tensions in a volatile region.

Two South Korean marines were killed and 15 South Korean soldiers and civilians were wounded when the North fired about 100 rounds of artillery at Yeonpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea, South Korea authorities said, according to the South Korean Yonhap news agency.

South Korea’s military responded with more than 80 rounds of artillery and deployed fighter jets to counter the fire, defense officials said.

Firing between the two sides lasted for about an hour in the Yellow Sea, a longstanding flashpoint between the two Koreas. In March, a South Korean warship, the Cheonan, was sunk in the area with the loss of 46 lives in a suspected North Korean torpedo attack.

Colby, today there was a very elitist exchange between the Gov. Pataki and the panel on Morning Joe about whether a Pres. Palin could handle such a crisis.

It would dovetail Mediaite It-GIrl Palin and the Korea matter very nicely.

    Yer welcome…

Has Obama sent his apology letter to Kim yet over this incident?

  • More Liberty

This is a very situation. And I hope all can keep a cool head and not do anything too stupid. With that said, this is the Korean’s problem, and not ours. We need to start a non-interventionist foreign policy, but with the current admin and the neocons I’m sure our troops lives will be risked.

  • Just4thefax

Fact: I see another US apology to North Korea from Ozero soon!

What’s your point. Why should the USA always be the one risking our lives and money for other foreign nations? South Korea has an Army/Navy, and Marine Corps, partly funded by US taxpayers. It’s their problem, let them deal with it.

Yes, because the one thing we really need to do right now is to rashly act against a nuclear country run by a paranoid, egomanical mad man.

  • timzank

The only thing Obambi is gonna do is write a letter to Kim, apologize with a teleprompter to the world, and then blame George Bush.

If the weapon that was tested was picked up seismically, which it was, then it was more than just a dud.

Uh…it was a UN resolution to engage in that war. The US Congress never declared war. My point is that the Koreans need to deal with it. Those students over there are always protesting US troops stationed there. So fine, let the Koreans deal with the problem. We have enough on our plate. That is all I’m saying.

NK is just flexing muscle to compensate for their lack of equipment….they’ll flex, and then back off in exchange for foreign aide…..SK is the x-factor in this though. I’m not touting for NK by any means…right now it’s like two highly agitated dogs growling at each other over 2 square feet of ground.

Like he did when we had that Somali pirate problem…he was totally sitting poolside with a mojito in one hand and his crackberry in the other while was on a conference call with the joint chiefs when he authorized the SEALS to turn pirate heads into canoes.

Just remember, Obama wants to raise the marginal tax rate for the wealthiest Americans by five or so percent. That is tyranny and puts him on a moral par with Kim Jong-il. It is important that we don’t lose perspective.

  • NORBIT

When can we expect Obama to apologize to the North Koreans for America’s role in causing this unprovoked attack?

  • NORBIT

Did you all note that D. Ortega said he couldn’t be removed from power because he controlled the banks, businesses and media?

Does that sound familiar to what the Obama Marxist Progressives (and their media) tried to do here? – but were THWARTED on 11-02-10!!!

    - and we’ll finish the job in 2012!

NEW POLL ZOGBY ……..PALIN TIED WITH OBAMA…..

President Obama has passed the Big 4-0 — going the wrong way.

Turns out voters were not simply satisfied to spank the Democrat and his party in the Nov. 2 midterm elections with historic losses in the House of Representatives.

Obama’s job approval rating as calculated by the Zogby Poll has now sunk to 39%, a new low for his 22-month presidency that began with so much hope and excitement and poll numbers up around 70. As recently as Sept. 20, his job approval was 49%.

A whopping 60% now disapprove of his job, up from 51% disapproval Sept. 20.

Obama now trails in hypothetical 2012 matchups against Republicans Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and the next Bush, Jeb.

And, oh, my! Lookee here! Obama has even fallen into a statistical tie with none other than Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor. How embarrassing that is because other polls have shown a majority of Americans believe she is unqualified for the presidency. So it appears many have now decided, on second thought, Obama looks that way too

I didn’t like south Koreas response. ..” if it happends again”
Attacked by a rival killing 2 of your own demands a stronger response than that. ..Hope they are not waiting for the US to intervene. ..Or the UN, they’ll be nucked before any response from those 2sources. ..
Sometimes you gotta forget your head and grab your balls. ..And south Korea needs to step up….today

Lot of truth in that statement.

I completely agree with you here; it’s not our job to go around policing the world. You don’t want us there then fine. Deal with it yourself.

No surprise here. After the North Koreans torpedoed that ship a few months back, Obama and company did zilch, nada, nothing, zero! So the North Koreans have now sized up the commander-in-chief, and realize that they can up the ante and face no consequences. This is Jimmy Carter all over again for those who missed it the first time around.

Well what CAN Obama do? North Korea is like a cornered wolf… you can try to kill it with a knife, but it’ll probably go down tearing your throat out.

It’s a well known fact that NK has missiles pointed directly at Seoul (which is only 30 miles from the DMZ), ready to fire within a minutes notice. Plus, South Korea can’t risk escalation in the war (which is still going on, mind you) interfering with their international business affairs. The situation with North Korea is an immensely delicate one, and you honestly can’t expect Obama to do much about it besides economic sanctions and ‘stern condemnations’.

No, any sort of military action is completely up to South Korea to decide on. They’ll suffer the direct consequences of escalation, so it’s only fair that they decide how it begins. The US will support, of course, but they can’t treat this like they treated Iraq or Afghanistan.

Maybe we should send Madeline Halfbright to North Korea so she can dance with Kim Jong iL some more.

THE REASON NORTH KOREA HAS NUKES IS BECAUSE CLINTON GAVE THEM THE TECHNOLOGY.

Before he apologizes he wants to get Republican Congressman Joe Barton’s advice on how to apologize to people who fuck over an entire country.

Couple of points for those people who are wondering why US troops are at risk. In the original N. Korean invasion, the South Korean troops folded like wet cardboard, as the North overran almost all of South Korea. Until they hit the US troops there, at which point the N. Koreans stalled. When we counterattacked with Gen McArthur, they were driven back out of S. Korea, and the war continued from there. After this incident, the US kept a unit in Korea at all times so that South Korea would not be completely overrun. All the U.S. needed was one port city as a beachhead, and we could retake South Korea. But the South Korean troops despite their better food and gear have a running away problem.

One of the reasons for this is that in Korea, the north is where the fighting clans lived, to hold off their traditional Chinese foes. The south has a farming tradition and sent food to the North where the land is poor traditionally. The division of the country into two states has really hurt Korea as a whole, think Germany post WWII. As many posters have said, the North Koreans sense the weakness in the US president and will exploit this in any way they can. Obama’s youth is also a factor, Koreans respect elders and will try to push around younger leaders. They do not think the way westerners do.
