NYDN’s King Fires Back at Daily Beast Over Plagiarism Charge: ‘They Ride Hard for Hillary’
New York Daily News columnist Shaun King is firing back on Twitter this afternoon after The Daily Beast called him out for plagiarized paragraphs from their exclusive on the suffering of a black veteran.
Two paragraphs in his piece were word-for-word the same as the original, and people have found other examples of this happening. King insisted that he did not plagiarize anything and the problems came in the editing process:
1. No. I did not plagiarize @TheDailyBeast or @FiveThirtyEight or anyone else. Where I attributed & linked to both pic.twitter.com/PDfapqWucx
— Shaun King (@ShaunKing) April 19, 2016
2. Here is what I submitted to my editors THIS MORNING where I properly attributed to Kate of @TheDailyBeast pic.twitter.com/sVzblHzNqu

3. Here is where I properly attributed to @FiveThirtyEight. Notice I link, credit them, and include block quotes. pic.twitter.com/wWFJLAEeJX
— Shaun King (@ShaunKing) April 19, 2016
4. Our editorial team @NYDailyNews has apologized to me for not properly including the attributions that I provided.
— Shaun King (@ShaunKing) April 19, 2016
5. In both instances I provided:
a. Links back to 538 & Daily Beast
b. Clear written attribution
c. Clear block quotes of their material— Shaun King (@ShaunKing) April 19, 2016
He admitted that he doesn’t generally go back to read his stories after they’re posted:
6. After I write a story, submit it to editors, and respond to any questions they have, I do not go back and read the live web version.
— Shaun King (@ShaunKing) April 19, 2016
King also lashed out at The Daily Beast and even invoked Chelsea Clinton being on the board of directors of IAC, the publication’s parent company, to raise some questions:
7. Anyway, it was handled poorly by @TheDailyBeast. They should've contacted my editors FIRST before blasting me on Twitter.
— Shaun King (@ShaunKing) April 19, 2016
8. Also, Chelsea Clinton is on the board of the parent company of The Daily Beast. They ride HARD for Hillary. Sure that played a role.

Again you are making shit up. I said I don't read them AFTER they are published online. https://t.co/ppmofWOPFT
— Shaun King (@ShaunKing) April 19, 2016
Also, half a dozen people have written me to tell me you are generally an asshole. You should've called my editors. https://t.co/ppmofWOPFT
— Shaun King (@ShaunKing) April 19, 2016
By in large, if you think I plagiarized a damn thing, you can kiss my ass. Feel free to quote that. Those are my words too.

Some people mocked King for the Clinton invocation:
An anagram for "The Daily Beast" is "Behead Tastily" so lets dispense with the notion Chelsea Clinton doesnt know what shes doing

Chelsea Clinton all serious and stuff, calling us to give orders on hacking @NYDailyNews’s CMS to set @ShaunKing up. pic.twitter.com/fY8YOWA0KG

Ugh *gonna BE my excuse…

I'm just imagining the call from Chelsea Clinton and Philippe Reines to the Daily Beast. "Noah, it's time for… Operation Checkmate."
