Pew Study: Wealth Gap Between Whites And Non-Whites Widens; GOP Make Gains Among White Voters

All politics is local, and it doesn’t get any more local than your own wallet. A new Pew study that shows record wealth gaps between white people and black and Hispanic people is getting some air in today’s news cycle, but another recent Pew study, which shows Republicans making large gains among white voters, deserves attention alongside it. Is this a case of knowing on which side your bread is buttered?

That’s a temptingly simplistic takeaway, but a closer look at Pew’s wealth gap study reveals that not only is there no bread, people in all of these groups can’t even get a schmear of Country Crock. While the wealth gap between whites and others has widened, all three of the groups in the study saw their net worth decline during President Bush’s second term. The study is based on a comparison of newly-released figures from 2005 and 2009.

During that timeframe, Pew notes that “inflation-adjusted median wealth fell by 66% among Hispanic households and 53% among black households, compared with just 16% among white households.”

As if that difference wasn’t stark enough, take a look at where they started. In 2005, black households had a median net worth of $12,124 , Hispanic households $18,359, and white households $134,992. In 2009, black households had a median net worth of $5,677, Hispanic households $6,325, and white households had $113,149 in median net worth.

Pew’s party affiliation study shows that, while black and Hispanic support for Democrats has remained basically flat, there has been a 13-point swing among white voters in favor of Republicans. The consistency of minority support for Democrats, particularly among black voters, is likely due, in large part, to historic alienation of these groups by Republicans. At a glance, it appears that white voters are doing fine, and are much readier to roll the dice on the GOP.

Appearances can be deceptive, though, as Republicans made their biggest gains among young, poorer (less than $30k) white voters, a nineteen point swing. Embedded in the wealth gap study is the fact that those median net worth figures for white households are horribly skewed by the fact that almost all of the richest people in America are white (Oprah Winfrey clocks in at #130). Bill Gates and I have an average net worth of $28 billion. The average white person isn’t actually doing twenty times better than the average black person.

However, the appearance of economic opportunity clouds the mind. It appears that some of the same voters who were willing to jump into the Obama frying pan in 2008 are now ready to fling themselves back into the fire. They are blissfully unaware that there is a class war, and they have lost. The rest of us know that these guys are never going to let us into the club no matter how much we protect their tax breaks, and they’re just one tax deduction away from not letting us build their mansions anymore. Unfortunately, “our” party is always one Republican hissy fit away from caving in to them.

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.  When the US illegally imports (by way of illegal immigration), several hundred thousand of poor, uneducated and even illiterate Hispanics each and every year, OF COURSE there’s going to be a “wealth divide”.

Also, the illegal immigrant population artificially lowers wages for the legal labor pool in America, which is another contributing factor to this wealth gap.

End illegal  and uncontrolled immigration, and many of these problems go away on their own.

A study needs to be done as to why there are no rich liberals.

And what’s with these counts on the comments?  The numbers swirl around like a slot machine, even when no comments have been added or deleted.

  • pureFreedom

Until you start seeing where young black people heroes are NOT rap stars talking about shooting each other and being victims to everything under the sun and illegal immigrants having babies at 15 into poverty you wont see a change in these polls and numbers.
Facts are facts and the democrats want these numbers to stay this way otherwise their party would disappear from just people realizing being dependent on anything is a bad thing especially the government.

  • thisexists

People on the left such as Tommy only look at the surface.  They don’t look at things like the black community having a 65-70% rate of single parent households.  So when young black men take off and leave their girlfriends holding the bag, Tommy only sees the resulting poverty as somehow being the white man’s fault.  The main thing is to never call on young black men to show some personal responsibility.

Which group puts their kids in home school/private school and which depends on the government to educate?  Getting the government out of the education business would cause the single biggest adjustment to this gap.  There is no incentive to compete and change to give kids in poor communities a better opportunity.  But it won’t happen because you have people that vote by race even as their race sinks lower economically.  If you believe the myth that Democrats are for the poor and Republicans the rich, who gains by there being more poverty and who by there being more productivity?

Thank you for getting this exactly right.

Unsaid by Tommy or anyone else is this: the Republican Party attracts those who want to make a better life for themselves, and someday maybe even become rich. They still believe in the American Dream. This requires an entrepreneurial spirit — if you want the government to take care of you, so you don’t have to take care of yourself, you will never achieve that better life and you will never consider joining the Republican Party.

Who are the new entrepreneurs? Quite often they are recent immigrants from Europe and Asia, but not so much from Latin America — Mexicans and other want the better life, but they come from a culture that was not entrepreneurial. To get rich in Mexico, you had to have political connections.

My God Tommy can you go more than one “column” in row without trotting out your race baiting crap?  What do you in between your pandering to communists on RT and your class/race warfare drivel on Mediaite?  What’s the wealth gap between buttugly white Marxist “columnists” on Mediaite and the minorities you stroke?  Your pathetic ilk are more responsible for blacks and hispanics’ affiliation with the Demcrat/Marxist party than any economic or wealth reason.  I say your ilk because, well, you’re reaching like, less people than Air America.  Loser.

President Obama has done a lot for all of the people in the United States.  We are definitely better off than 4 years ago.  The country was already in a recession and people had already begun to lose their jobs and homes….Again, yes we are MUCH better off.  It really sadends me to think that people really thought that President Obama was going to be able to clean up in 3 years the mess that President Bush took 8 to “F” up (please excuse my expression).  The country was in a surplus before the Bush era.  He bankrupted the country and laughed at the mess he caused. Yes, we are better off.

Ahhh you have those mexicans all figured out. There are no wealthy people from those darn latin american countries and the ones who are well they are probably corrupt. This is such racist bs it could have been written in a newspaper 80 years ago by a conservative saying the same thing about Italians and Irish. What a joke.

  • Jerry Baustian

My point is that some cultures are more entrepreneurial than others. Cultures are not identical worldwide.

Also, immigrants are different from the people who remained behind and decided not to emigrate. They are risk-takers, because leaving your home and moving to another country is a risk. So immigrants tend to be more entrepreneurial than the native-born. And some immigrants are more entrepreneurial than others. .. the people who can cross the border easily and find jobs in agriculture are not as entrepreneurial, generally speaking, than those coming from another continent.

  • Anonymous

don’t let the door hit you on the way out. you wont be missed…

  • insideguy

Jerry why would they be less entrepreneurial than any other immigrants?  You are backing yourself into a corner. For years Chinese people have come from a culture that was not entrepreneurial in the least. They came from communism or worse than that before that they came from basically a medieval culture run by warlords. How did they succeed? Hispanic americans are making progress in this country although it is slow, they are making progress. This chart is flawed and here is the reason. Whatever progress “Hispanic Americans” and this is such a huge group its hard to equate. But whatever progress they are making is discounted by the flood of new hispanics coming into this country who are poor and have little education. So when the last generation or the one after that actually does make progress the average income is constantly being brought down because there are so many new hispanics coming into our culture. If blue collar wages were higher in this country maybe even these recent immigrants could make progress.

  • Jerry Baustian

Wherever Chinese have migrated, they have gone into one business or another. Even the Chinese brought to the US to build the Central Pacific Railroad started laundries and cafes. In Hawaii, Malaya, the Dutch East Indies, Indochina, Ceylon, East Africa, the Caribbean — everywhere the Overseas Chinese landed, they started businesses.

No matter how many millions the Communists killed, they could not kill the innate Chinese entrepreneurial spirit.

As for Mexican immigrants.. the further one travels from his native land, the more likely he is to be a risk-taker. That is my explanation why Mexicans in the US are not such big risk-takers — it is relatively easy for them to get here.

You gotta love how he guides you to his other horseshit columns.
He’s so caught up in his political beliefs that he doesn’t have a clue what the real world is like anymore.
He so much wanted Obama to be this mighty warrior and he turned out to be another politician. He uses race and class warfare to justify Obama’s failings, mainly because he can’t acknowledge his failings in supporting this President.

    You write:

“Embedded in the wealth gap study is the fact that those median net worth
figures for white households are horribly skewed by the fact that
almost all of the richest people in America are white (Oprah Winfrey clocks in at #130). Bill Gates
and I have an average net worth of $28 billion. The average white
person isn’t actually doing twenty times better than the average black
    person.”

First of all, the median, which is the middle value in a sequence, is NOT skewed by outliers. You’re confusing the median with the mean, which would be skewed by those high values of the super-wealthy. In this case, all wealth values were arranged in a sequence, and the value at the 50th percentile was reported as the “average.” There is no skewing of the data here.

Second, we’re not talking about individuals here; we’re talking about households.

To the extent, then, that the “average” can be taken to be the middle value, we can conclude that the average white household IS doing 20x better than the average black household.
