Rahm Emanuel’s ‘Welcome Back To Chicago’ Not Especially Smooth
This week, White House Chief of Staff-turned Chicago mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel began his ‘Tell It Like It Is’ listening tour on the streets of Chicago. And the city’s residents proved – both to Emanuel’s face and in speaking to local news reporters – that when it comes to sharing blunt, critical opinions, they can give Emanuel a run for his money.
Newscasts, of course, couldn’t enough of this (and who could blame them?). One called it a “taste of reality.” Another wondered: “Will Rahm Emanuel’s candidacy be over before it begins?” And residents themselves said things to the camera like, “He does not belong here,” “He didn’t give us a chance to voice our actual opinion[s],” and “He hasn’t been here for two years – I honestly don’t think it’s fair for him to come back and say he wants to be mayor.” Also pointed out on newscasts: that Emanuel was caught using hand sanitizer after his handshake tour, and that he filmed the video where he announced the listening tour – in which he said, among other things, “I’m glad to be home” – in Washington, D.C.
It probably wasn’t all bad for Emanuel, but it certainly appears he’s got work to do winning hearts and minds – and even in convincing many Chicago residents that he’s truly one of their own. As another anchor put it, “Welcome to Chicago, huh?”
