Sign Language Interpreter at Mandela Funeral Called ‘A Fake’
The national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa called the sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service Tuesday “a fake.”
Bruno Druchen told the Associated Press that the man on stage throughout the service “was moving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for,” adding that two other sign language experts watching the performance could not identify in what language the man was signing, if any at all.
“It was horrible, an absolute circus,” another interpreter told AP. “Only he can understand those gestures.”
A spokesman for the African National Congress said the government is preparing a statement, but did not comment to AP.
