Trump Named TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year Over Putin, Clinton, and Beyonce

TIME Magazine announced its Person of the Year this morning, and President-elect Donald Trump has taken the top honor:

Despite earning a 2015 nomination, Trump fell short in earning last year’s title. The TIME editorial effort chose German Chancellor Angela Merkel, edging the then-surprise political candidate.

TIME writes about its decision, “[I]t’s difficult to count all the ways Trump remade the game.” And surely, it’s tough to make the case against Trump winning the honor. For the 2016 field, the real estate mogul turned likely GOP nominee turned even more likely Presidential victor came out on top of a crowded list of finalists that included Mark Zuckerberg, Beyonce, The Whistleblowers of Flint, Michigan, US Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, the CRISPR scientists, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Even a few names from Trump’s political orbit were in final consideration. Russian president Vladimir Putin again was a nominee, as was UKIP leader Nigel Farange after the referendum to leave the European Union. And Trump — once again — defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the honor as well.
