Trump Reportedly Considered Revoking Gorsuch’s SCOTUS Nomination Because He Wasn’t ‘Loyal’ Enough

A new report suggests that President Trump once got so mad at Neil Gorsuch that he almost decided against nominating the judge to the Supreme Court.

Ever since Trump took office, he and his supporters have said that the nomination of a conservative justice to replace Antonin Scalia has been one of the most positive effects of his presidency. According to the Washington Post, however, Trump once angrily told his advisors that he was thinking about rescinding Grouch’s nomination because he wasn’t “loyal” enough to the president.

From WaPo:

The president worried that Gorsuch would not be “loyal,” one of the people said, and told aides that he was tempted to pull Gorsuch’s nomination — and that he knew plenty of other judges who would want the job.

Trump’s problem with Gorsuch began after he criticized the president and said that Trump’s slams against federal judges were “disheartening” and “demoralizing.” This was back when Trump was railing against the judiciary over the repeated legal setbacks for his effort to set up a travel ban and prohibit people from several Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.

One aide told WaPo that Gorsuch’s perceived ungratefulness to Trump caused the president to have an “explosion” of anger. House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reportedly saw Trump rant about the future SCOTUS justice, and McConnell had to pacify the president after he wailed, “he’s probably going to end up being a liberal like the rest of them.”

“It’s clear [Trump] was very upset with [Gorsuch’s] comment”, a source told WaPo.

White House spokesman Raj Shah disputed the report, telling WaPo that Trump never considered revoking support for Gorsuch.

“The president’s nomination of Neil M. Gorsuch was among his first and most important accomplishments during his first year in office, and delivered on a major campaign promise. At no point did the president consider withdrawing Justice Gorsuch’s nomination. He is very proud of the accomplishment.”
