WaPo Removes Sections of Article After Source Admits to Fabrications

Entire sections of an article in the Washington Post’s new longread vertical Storyline were removed Wednesday after one of the story’s primary sources admitted to fabricating a number of the experiences related by author Jeff Guo.

The changes were made to Monday’s “The black HIV epidemic: A public health mystery from Atlanta’s gay community,” which now begins with the following editorial note:

Storyline editor Jim Tankersly told Washington Post media critic Erik Wemple the paper was contacted by someone who contradicted Mickyel Bradford’s recounting of experiences, at which point Bradford admitted to having invented the scenes. Per Wemple, about 2,000 words of the story had to be removed.
