‘You Deserve What You Get!’: Stephen A. Smith Rants Against O.J. Simpson’s Possible Parole
After being an inmate at the Lovelock Correctional Center in Nevada since 2008, O.J. Simpson is eligible for parole this October. In a piece for Sports Illustrated on Tuesday, sports law expert Michael McCann (along with SI executive editor L. Jon Wertheim) said that Simpson stands a good shot at having his request granted.
“Indications are strong that this will be the year O.J. Simpson will be released from prison,” McCann and Wertheim wrote.
Stephen A. Smith took exception to this. And in a rant on First Take this week (which appeared on our radar thanks to Awful Announcing), Smith said he believes the request should be denied and Simpson should remain behind bars.
“Here’s the reason why I think he should spend the rest of his life in prison,” Smith said. “Because he’s an idiot! That’s why!”
While Smith said that he believes Simpson got “railroaded” in the 2008 Nevada case when he was convicted on 12 counts relating to a botched attempt to reclaim some personal memorabilia, he added that he believes Simpson was wrongly acquitted of the murders of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman in 1995. He also believes Simpson “laughed in the face of the system,” following the so-called Trial of the Century by getting mixed up in another incident.
“I hope he’s watching me right now!” Smith said. “That man brought all of this on himself! He didn’t know any better! He was an idiot for finding himself in another predicament! And he put it on himself. And he deserves what he’s getting.”
