You think of “men’s magazines” and you think of Maxim or Men’s Health. Maybe you think of ESPN:The Magazine or GQ or even Out. You probably aren’t thinking about articles that discuss how to be a good dad, what it’s like for a transgender man to shave for the first time, or life inside Tennessee’s execution chamber.

Joy Behar, New York Times Big Winners at GLAAD Awards

HLN host and The View panelist Joy Behar and actress Cynthia Nixon received the top honors at the Gay an Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Awards handed out March 13 in New York. Behar won the excellence in media honors and Nixon received the Vito Russo Award for advocacy by an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender media person.

NY Times Magazine Celebrates Gay Teens; But Does It Exploit Them, Too?

In this week’s New York Times Magazine‘s online preview, writer Benoit Denizet-Lewis explores the world of gay youth in a story titled boldly “Coming Out in Middle School.” The result is a poignant tribute to brave teenagers across the United States and their supportive families and educators. But due to its sensitive (and sexual) subject matter, some of it leaves me feeling a tad icky, and more viscerally, protective of the interviewees, nearly all of whom are in their early teens.
