Caught On Tape: Partying Lawmaker Hits On Young Reporter

Since over the last five years more than 80 state legislators have been indicted or convicted, it made sense for ABC News to investigate corruption from corporate interests and lobbyists creeping into state capitals around the nation. But while documenting unsavory political scandals at the state level, a film crew captured a creep of another sort. Watch video below of a Puerto Rican legislator getting far too close for comfort with a student journalist. America, meet Jorge Navarro Suarez.

At a national convention of state legislators in Louisville, Kentucky over the summer, more than 1,300 politicians and staffers fanned out across Louisville to a series of corporate and lobbyist-sponsored dinners and parties, including a lavish reception at the world-famous horse racing venue Churchill Downs sponsored by Coca-Cola, Wells Fargo and Sprint, among others, and a massive waterfront concert. Lawmakers devoured prime rib and tenderloin, and consumed bourbon by the barrel.

One legislator from Puerto Rico took advantage of the festive environment by making unwanted advances on a female student journalist, groping and kissing her –- all as the cameras rolled. In a statement to ABC News, Rep. Jorge Navarro Suarez denied any misconduct, and said he only got close to the student to understand what she was saying, since the music was loud and he doesn’t speak English well.

The media covered up the John Edwards dalliances, Mr. Suarez. assumed they would do the same for him. I guess he is not a Democrat.

OK, that looks lech-y and creepy, but:

Is he married?

He does look like he is way wrong in leaning in and kissing her, but it does look like she told him off and he raised his hands and pulled back and seems to apologize or at least acknowledge she didn’t want the attention.

I don’t defend him cornering her like that and kissing her – however, in an atmosphere with alcohol it isn’t the first time a (single?) guy got drunk and hit on a cute blonde girl.

If he’s married, then I can see the *scandal*, but if it was just a drunk guy trying to hit on a girl in a bar, I’ve seen way worse. Although, he is on a business trip, so he is no doubt in the wrong.

They seem to have failed miserably. That’s a tired and discredited canard. If there was any reticence on the part of the media, it was likely more out of respect for Ms. Edwards. The matter had to be news and not gossip. On the whole, the media handled this well, your bleating, kvetching, moaning and whining notwithstanding.

His behavior is simply unacceptable and disgusting. His excuse is the ridiculous.

Good for ABC for shining a light on both these lobbyist parties and on Suarez. This story on the lobbyists is exactly what the media should be doing. Investigative journalism. Especially with camera phones and video so easy to hide.

Has anyone else notice how ABC news has been really doing a much better job at news journalism than CBS or NBC lately?
