Ah, remember Christine O’Donnell? She was the non-witch, non-Senator, and non-Fox News host who took over the media this summer. Remember when there was a chance she could help run the country? No? Well, that’s probably because there wasn’t much of a chance. Chris Matthews remembers though! Today on Hardball, Matthews thanked his guest, O’Donnell’s former opponent, Chris Coons, for beating her. You know, “for life on this planet.”

Coons was appearing on the show to discuss the war on Afghanistan. On his way out, Matthews, laughing, made the remark. Wow. All of the other Hardball guests just got a perfunctory “Merry Christmas” when their segment was done. Coons got credit with saving every single living thing on Earth. How humbling.

Coons, in response, just smiled politely.
