Clinton Will Continue Giving Paid Speeches: ‘I Gotta Pay Our Bills’

Former president Bill Clinton defended both his foundation and his exorbitant speaking fees on the Today show Monday morning, saying “I gotta pay our bills.”

Clinton maintained that the speeches were an “independent” source of revenue, as anybody he did business with would essentially become political targets.

“I have turned down a lot of [speaking opportunities],” Clinton said. “If I think there’s something wrong with it, I don’t take it. And I disclose who gave them to me.”

“So [Hillary Clinton] is now running for president,” Cynthia McFadden asked. “Will you continue to give speeches?”

“Oh, yeah,” Clinton said. “I got to pay our bills.”

Clinton also said he would decide later “if it were the right thing to do” to step down from the Clinton Foundation if his wife were elected.
