Earthquake Raises Concerns Over Stability Of Japanese Nuclear Power Plants

Thousands of people in Japan who live near a nuclear power plant have been ordered to evacuate as officials work to determine if the huge magnitude 8.9 earthquake caused any damage to the facility. At one plant, a quake-related power failure caused the plant’s cooling system to fail, resulting in Japan’s first-ever nuclear power plant emergency declaration.

Japan has 54 nuclear power plants which provide the country with about thirty percent of its power. Experts say the quake has caused “a complete disaster” for the system, as each facility will need to be thoroughly examined before they can resume normal operations.

A cautionary moment for alternative energy proponents. Every nuclear power plant is one earthquake/hurricane/tornado/suicide bomber away from a nightmare. Japan just lost 30% of her power production.

Everything is one earthquake/hurricane/tornado/suicide bomber away from a nightmare. Granted the level of nightmare depends on what it is and a nuclear power plant would definitely be on the top of the list. This will make them rethink and strengthen the regulations required to build not only nuclear power plants, but a lot of other things. And rightly so.

I’m not a proponent of nuclear energy but fossil fuels come from a finite source and WILL run out someday. I think that day is closer than we want to believe. It sort of boggles the mind that in the Twenty-First Century we are still burning things for energy. We’ve been burning things for energy since humans discovered that fire was hot then how to build one.

So we go with something like this that can destroy in an instant and has many problems such as storage of material, or we go with the ancient technology of burning our limited fossil fuels that cause damage to the environment over time and will disappear with the fossil fuel themselves. Sounds like a lose-lose as far as options go.

I hope they can figure out how to get that thing under control before the real nightmare happens.
