ratings

Cable news ratings, November 5, 2009: Check out the highlights, and see the full ratings below:

• Fox News was the top-rated cable news network, by far, yesterday during coverage of the Fort Hood shooting. The network topped all three cable news networks combined (CNN, MSNBC, HLN) from 3pmET-MidnightET with their coverage, in both total viewers and the A25-54 demographic. CNN was a clear #2 for the coverage, with MSNBC 3rd and HLN 4th.

Bret Baier’s 6pmET hour, Shepard Smith’s 7pmET hour and Bill O’Reilly’s 8pmET hour on Fox News all had their highest rated programs of the year last night in total viewers. O’Reilly also had his highest in the demo.

• Unlike election night on Tuesday, CNN was the clear #2 cable news network in prime time last night.

I wonder how these numbers compare to the regular viewing patterns.

My gut says that Fox may have been up a bit and perhaps CNN had a higher percentage boost, but my quick thoughts are that these look a lot like the regular nightly ratings.

  • Magister Magister says:

Okay, now that I’ve reread the post, I see that some hours on Fox set personal records, so clearly my gut was correct about there being some kind of increase. Though I still have to wonder about the comparative percentages of increase and whether it represents a sea change in “when breaking news happens…”

  • germ germ says:

Well CNN went from dead to second, which I can see. People still trust CNN for hard news coverage, but with their nightly lineup of dull, dull, and more dull it is no wonder they come in last compared to the ideological division of the Fox and MSNBC evening programs.

  • Is this really news anymore?

This could have been avoided if everyone in America would just pack a pistol, you know like they do on Army bases, you sure wouldn,t see this happening on a military base, everybody packs heat.

Fox is rapidly becoming the default news network for major breaking events. The day Michael Jackson died, everyone turned to CNN. That used to be almost a cliche: “Hey, something big just happened, turn on CNN.”

That is no longer the case, and there are two possible reasons:
    1. Most people are Republicans, so they turn to the Republican network (This is obviously not true, the country is split 50-50)
    2. More people trust Fox to get it right than any other network.

I think ABC also deserves credit, as does Matt Laur, for being responsible and mentioning the Muslim aspect and the religious utterance Hassan made prior to the shooting. It is not politically incorrect to mention the man is a Muslim any more than it is incorrect to mention that a drunk driver who just killed someone is an illegal alien. If you choose not to include all the facts, then include none of the facts, turn out the lights and shut down the office, because you are finished.

If people like Jake Tapper, the outgoing Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopolis are any indication of how ABC runs its news operation, they will eventually become the top-rated broadcast operation just as Fox has taken over the cable race.

  • Nachi Nachi says:

FOX and FOX-watchers love to send & talk about “the troops.” Because they never ARE the troops!

  • libra blue libra blue says:

@straitshooter, Don’t forget it is not politically correct to say “Barack HUSSEIN Obama” either.

  • Magister Magister says:

John Edwards Sex Tape Controversy: Geraldo Interviews Andrew Young

    video

In case you missed it, here are some key concepts surrounding this bizarre story: Presidential Candidacy, Baby Dady, Mistress, Sex Tape, Cover up and Mastermind. The players? John Edwards, Rielle Hunter, Elizabeth Edwards and Andrew Young (former staffer to the Edwards presidential campaign.) Yesterday, Geraldo Rivera interviewed Young about the existence of the so called steamy sex tape, a video of which follows
