Fox’s Chris Wallace To Sen. Durbin: ‘Are You Going To Change The Filibuster Rule?’

video

On Fox News Sunday today, Senator Dick Durbin discussed the recent increase in filibustering in the Senate, and the possibility of changing filibuster rules in the new Congress next month.

Host Chris Wallace asked Durbin if Senate Democrats plan to attempt to change the filibuster rule in the new Congress in order to limit filibustering, especially considering that the number of cloture votes to end filibusters was exceptionally high in this year’s Congress.

“It’s a clear abuse of what was supposed to be a rarely used procedural option,” Durbin responded. “We need to put an end to secret holes in the United States Senate. It’s archaic, it’s wrong, we need more transparency.”

Hey, remember in 2005 when the Republicans wanted to do away with the filibuster… and the Democrats didn’t:

GWEN IFILL: Senate leaders, both Republican and Democrat, are counting votes and devising strategy for this latest culture clash over judicial nominations. Here to lay that out are two members of the Judiciary Committee. Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona is the chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, and Democratic Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois is the assistant minority leader. Welcome, gentlemen.

Sen. Durbin, it seems that what is normally an arcane dispute over Senate rules has suddenly turned the corner into kind of a cultural war. How did that happen?

SEN. DICK DURBIN: It’s an interesting thing because when this first got started I thought the American people won’t even understand the debate: The use of terms like filibuster and the rules of the Senate. Who pays any attention? But it’s amazing that it’s caught on. And I think that’s why it’s moved into this new phase in opposition. People across the country understand what it means to change the rules in the middle of the game, which is what the nuclear option would do. It would eliminate the filibuster on judicial nominees, a tradition of the Senate that’s been here for over 200 years.

It also is going to assault a very fundamental principle of checks and balances, which gives to the Senate the last word when it comes to advice and consent of judicial nominees and presidential appointments. But I think the thing that really comes home is the fact that the president has successfully brought through Congress — a Congress, the Senate I should say of Democrats and Republicans — over 95 percent of his nominees. He’s been extremely successful, but he wants them all. He wants more power. It’s not just the power to govern. It’s the power to rule.

Oh, how things change. In 2005, Durbin thought the Republicans were trying to “change the rules in the middle of the game”… but now, I guess things are different.

    Funny how that happens.

There are no secret holes in the Unites States Senate. There are secret -holds- but they have nothing to do with filibusters.

what i heard durbin saying in the clip is that he doesn’t want to eliminate the filibuster, only prevent the member who does filibuster from leaving the senate to go to the gym, etc.
might be funny, but it makes a whole lot of sense to me.

Sounds real fishy. Are we (the people) going to have to micro manage these guys? Give them a detailed set of rules for running the Senate and not allow them to waiver at all???

I think the large amount of filibusters points out just how partisian we have become.

Ok, You’ve made the point just4thefax messed up a sentence, now try to address the post itself. As always, a democrat makes a ridiculous and obviously stupid remark so instead of trying to defend Durbin you want to quibble about commenters sentence structure??

    Defend Durbin.

Dickie Dirtbin would love to change the fillibuster rule so only libs could engage in fillibuster.

  • BushClintonCrimeFamily

Excuse me, but changing the rule would benefit the REPUGS who are set to take over in 2012. You Repugs should welcome it. You have to admit, you abused it. And you know it. Whatcha gonna do when your party has the Senate but the Dems ‘fillibuster’ every bill? You’re gonna wish you’d changed the rules.

Durbin isn’t doing it out of the goodness of his heart (or for the country.) They are doing it to slow down the sea of change coming from Tea Party thinking.

The libs have to try to change the rules.
