Jimmy Fallon’s And Justin Timberlake’s ‘History Of Rap’ Is Now A Trilogy

video

For the first time about a year ago, Justin Timberlake joined Jimmy Fallon on Late Night to perform an impressively delivered potpourri of history’s greatest rap songs. Over the summer, the duo reprised their roles as hip-hop historians (with the help of The Roots, of course) for a second round of classics. Last night, they rounded out a trilogy that threatens (we hope) to become a seasonal feature in Late Night.

Timberlake didn’t get much of an introduction– they had work to do. The highlights? There are many, from The Fugees to Coolio to Nicki Minaj and Naughty by Nature, but Timberlake and Fallon delivering the introduction to Sir Mix-A-Lot‘s “Baby Got Back” (“Oh. My. God. Becki, look at her butt.”) is something to behold, as is their dialogue on whether Jimmy Fallon is actually hardcore enough to own an AK (the short answer? No).

Another great thing about this segment? The show has made the full playlist of songs in the segment available for those with Spotify.

Back in the old days, George Clinton used to go on Letterman and perform, and part of his schtick was to go up in the audience and encourage Dave’s 100% white audience to make fools of themselves dancing to the king of funk’s groove. The difference between Letterman and Timberlake and Fallon is that Letterman had a sense of irony about the whole thing that Fallon and certainly Timberlake seem to lack.
