Kasich Refuses to Say if Supporters in Indiana Should Vote for Him: ‘I’m Not Getting Into That’

The day after telling reporters that he wanted his supporters in Indiana to vote for him, Republican presidential candidate John Kasich refused to say Tuesday morning who they should vote for.

Kasich was giving an interview with NBC’s Today when the hosts continuously pressed him on the specifics of his agreement with Ted Cruz to stop campaigning in Indiana. “Are you telling Indiana voters, if you want to stop Trump, vote for Cruz, don’t vote for me?” asked Savannah Guthrie.

“I’m telling anybody anything in Indiana, because I’m not campaigning in Indiana. I don’t tell voters what to do,” he responded. “Voters are smart enough to figure out what they want to do.”

“You guys are the ones who are confused and upset, we’re not,” he continued. “I mean, the fact of the matter is, I’m going to be going on Thursday to Oregon. Ted Cruz is not going to Oregon, he may be in Indiana. I’m not going to Indiana.”

“The people in Indiana who are watching this program right now, your message come primary day there is to vote for…?” asked Matt Lauer.

After a long pause, Kasich dodged the question. “Look I’m not getting into that, Matt. Things are not so plain and simple.”

Kasich said he couldn’t just tell his supporters what to do. “I don’t understand what’s so — what the big deal is about this, other than the fact that [Cruz] and I both would prefer to have an open convention, where delegates can pick the person who can best defeat Hillary Clinton. End of story.”
