PolitiFact Editor On Rachel Maddow’s Response: “What She Just Did Was Mislead Everybody”

Video

The ongoing feud between Rachel Maddow and PolitiFact has already caused migraines for some, and don’t expect relief anytime soon. PolitiFact’s editor Bill Adair appeared on Reliable Sources this morning to defend his website’s original assertion that Maddow’s statements on the Wisconsin budget were untrue, and also to address Maddow’s request for a correction.

Although host Howard Kurtz was skeptical of how readily Adair should be labeling journalists as having peddled falsehoods, Adair defended the importance of not just fact-checking politicians, as they most frequently do, but also monitoring television commentators. When Kurtz played a clip of Maddow addressing the criticism and attempting to prove PolitiFact needed to make a correction, Adair proved he can fact-check on-demand and told Kurtz “what she just did was mislead everybody” by playing a nine word clip out of context. Given that the PolitiFact conclusion was based on Maddow’s tone throughout the entire segment, it suggests that truth determination might not be as black and white as one would hope, still though with PolitiFact on the scene maybe journalists will be incentivized to spend some extra time researching any claims.

Isn’t that the mission statement of MSNBC & the LeftStream Media?

Watch how they deliberately avoid the central issue of inherent corruption in PUBLIC unions negotiating with the Democrats THEY ELECT!

Lets not pretend that facts are relevant in modern political discussion.

  • stephenpyle

    Politifact is pretty legit.

  • Emma

So tone, now determines whether something is factual? PolitiFact needs to issue a correction. They’re wrong and Maddow was correct.

  • ProObamaAgenda

well mr adair you lost the argument….perhaps you should stop resisting and make the correction like rachel asked you to. her staff is relentless and wont stop untill the prove that youre a republican party back pocket boy and destroys what little credibility you have. whenever you repukes claim “out of context” that means youre lying about something , like rachel said politifact goes way out of the way not to rate a clearly Pants On Fire lie by a republican as such and do just the opposite when it comes to dems. Im looking forward to Rachels new segment ….FACT CHECKING THE FACT CHECKERS……ok now to my main point…….NORBIT YOURE AN IDIOT

  • rubberneck

Rachel’s pathetic ego now on full display.

I hate that more attention isn’t given to the misleading information given on all the networks, including CNN. Maddow has all kinds of other misleading moments that get no attention outside of sites like Newsbusters.

  • same2u

All this tit-for-tat has proven to me is that when Politifact concludes that Glenn Beck makes a false statement it is a left wing blog.

  • TeaPartyPatriot

    The TRUTH, The FACTS, REALITY

Name three things you will NEVER hear from a lamestream socialist “Corrupt B-tard” media stooge of the lunatic-left d-crat socialists.

  • timzank

Shrewd move on Madcow’s part, she’ll have a weeks worth of shows just nitpicking the freaking minutae.

  • BatBoy

The reason WAPO & NYT and most major newspapers don’t do fact check is because it is easier to make crap up.

    Ahh Howie Rachel does lie.

Since Howie is such a cheerleader for RM, he should at least use pom-poms!

  • juan

Maddow, O’Donnell, and Ed distort, mislead, misconstrue and mostly LIE!

It was good to see Gov. Haley Barbour Swat Down Lawrence O’Donnell on Meet the Press.

It’s, also, great that politifact.com is calling attention to Rachel’s LIES!

I miss Olby. The way he’d call women names and Rachel would giggle reminded me of the banter between Carson and McMahon.

Thank you for straightening everybody out Emma. Now that we KNOW that Rachel is right & Politifact is wrong, the air is suddenly cleared, birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and nobody need make any more comments on this subject.

  • BarneyFranken

    The truth has no agenda.

  • klemjohansen

Let me get this straight- politifact is now taking umbrage to the “tone” of what you say? How precious. Sometimes folks go so far out of their way to appear “balanced” by publicly busting someone on the left that they end up looking rather foolish. This, I think, is one of this cases.

  • Probably NOT wrong

    Well Hell, Em!
    Close this thread.
    Nuff said!!!!

There it is in a nutshell, howards JOB was to BE a media critic, how long did he think he could fool the ppl? Rachel Maddow, being the intelligent person she is, and having the integrity that the don’t will have politifact for lunch, and keep them on the menu for future reference, we’ll all keep a closer eye on them from now on, politifact just made a big mistake, love it!

As far as Rachel goes, if she continues to speak out of both sides of her mouth (“there is a budget shortfiall / they are on pace for a suplus”) then you will always be right. And always wrong.

Maddow is gay so Politifact should leave her alone!

Note to PolitiFact: Don’t worry about MSNBC misleading anyone, no one’s watching.

  • Yoda002

I would say in this case Maddow is right.

  • notsofast

Yes, RM was ssooooooooooooooooooooooooo clear about what she was trying to say that she started her segment by saying the following:

RACHEL MADDOW, HOST: I’m here to report that there is nothing wrong in the state of Wisconsin. Wisconsin is fine. Wisconsin is great, actually. Despite what you may have heard about Wisconsin’s finances, Wisconsin is on track to have a budget surplus this year.

I am not kidding. I’m quoting their own version of the Congressional Budget Office, the state’s own nonpartisan “assess the state’s finances” agency. That agency said the month that the new Republican governor of Wisconsin was sworn in, last month, that the state was on track to have a $120 million budget surplus this year.

So, then why exactly does Wisconsin look like this right now?

    (VIDEO CLIP PLAYS)

MADDOW: Why is there a revolt in the American Midwest tonight? Why are we in day three of massive, massive protests — real upheaval in Wisconsin’s capital city of Madison? Why are we seeing what was described today by my friend John Nichols, a seventh-generation Wisconsinite, as perhaps the biggest protests that have been seen in that state since Vietnam? Why is this — look at this — why is this happening?

As the state’s own finances show, it is not happening because people who work for the state are the cause of some horrible budget crisis. It’s not because teachers are lazy and rich. It’s not because greedy snowplow drivers have bankrupted the state somehow.

The state is not bankrupt. Even though the state had started the year on track to have a budget surplus — now, there is, in fact, a $137 million budget shortfall. Republican Governor Scott Walker, coincidentally, has given away $140 million worth of business tax breaks since he came into office.

Hey, wait. That’s about exactly the size of the shortfall.”

So, is WI fine or great, RM?

Rachel had the facts right. If Politifact is going to go by the “tone” they need to change their name to ” Tonefacts”

I tend to agree with Tommy’s assessment in the other Mediaite story. Both had some things wrong and neither is willing to admit it. At least the CNN guy understood that she didn’t really say the Tax give breaks caused the shortfall.
One thing that Politifact didn’t mention in their column or on CNN was that the point of Maddow’s story was not the math around the budget, but around the idea that the budget was not the motivation for the move to take away collective bargaining. That’s a pretty relevant point.
I understand Adair’s point that their focus was on what they thought listeners would take away from Maddow’s words rather than parsing them to strictly, but , that being the case it’s hard to miss the point that the math, was not what was being stressed.

Rachel is usually very good about being fair and honest, in my opinion. However:

Maddow strongly implied on her 2/17 show that the shortfall was caused by the tax cuts — mentioning them in the same breath: “There is in fact a 137 million dollar budget shortfall. Republican Governor Scott Walker, coincidentally, has given away 140 million dollars worth of business tax breaks since he came into office. Hey wait! That’s about exactly the size of the shortfall…” If she is not linking the shortfall to the tax breaks, then there is no need to notice the amounts being a “coincidence”. Had Maddow not thought the one caused the other, then she would have said that Walker was going to make it even worse — by the same amount that this year he feels justifies busting the unions! The construction of her wording shows what she was thinking and where she was quite obviously trying to lead her viewers.

Rachel is now exploiting the fact that she didn’t spell out this link. This is akin to the guy who says outlandish things but is always ready with a “it was a joke” line when confronted. They’re both ways of avoiding responsibility.

Rachel should have just admitted she was wrong. Instead, she is sinking to duplicity and removing the arrow of satire from her quiver. And she is also attacking politico and diverting from the issue by bringing up her homosexuality when it wasn’t mentioned, AFAIK. It is disappointing for me that Rachel won’t stand up for what she obviously did believe.

  • da-wdc

I am a fan of Maddow and watch her show most days, but Politifact is right here.

  • Dem4Ever

Politifact was right about Maddow being wrong and Maddow was right about her being a homosexual.

  • ChrisNH

Just a weeeee bit more bludgeoning of MadCow and then we’ll get what we normally would from someone like her: tears. Yes, MadCow is on the verge of a ‘cue-the-tears’ moment.

What ever Politifact says now has to be question since they claimed to be fair and balanced.

  • fadman71

“…maybe journalists will be incentivized to spend some extra time researching any claims.” Actually reporters will not be incentivized to do anything since incentivized is not actually a word. The verb is “to incent”. Perhaps pointing out this mistake will incent you to stock your desk with a dictionary and to consult it on occasion.

  • CAconservative

Maddow, the epitome of journalist integrity…NOT! This is typical of the standards at MSNBC, or lack of.

  • jcalex

Who really gives a damn what Maddow thinks…Who put her on the air in the first place?
If any American makes any decision based on what Maddow said they will be greatly disappointed.
